Weekend Tragedies in Texas
Eight people died and seven more were hospitalized after a gunman opened fire in a mall in Allen, Texas, on Saturday. The shooter was killed on site by the police.
Details: The gunman was outfitted in body armor and carried an AR-15-style rifle and a handgun. Police haven’t found evidence that provides insight into the shooter’s motive. However, he wore a RWDS “Right Wing Death Squad” patch on his chest, a slogan popular with extremists and white supremacist groups.
President Biden ordered U.S. flags to be flown at half-mast until sunset Thursday.
Separately, police have charged George Alvarez with eight counts of manslaughter and 10 counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon for crashing into a bus stop outside of a migrant center in Brownsville, TX on Sunday. Eighteen people were hit by the SUV after it lost control and flipped into the crowd. Six people died on the scene and 12 were critically injured.
