Cruise Ship Virus Goes Global
Dozens of passengers from at least 12 countries left the hantavirus-stricken cruise ship MV Hondius on April 24 without contact tracing — including six Americans and seven British nationals. Authorities are now monitoring people on four continents, with confirmed or suspected cases in Switzerland, Singapore, France, and the Netherlands.
Three passengers have died, and at least five have tested positive for the Andes strain — the only hantavirus known to spread person to person. A Dutch flight attendant in Amsterdam is being tested after contact with an infected passenger and could be the first non-passenger infection. None of the 140+ passengers and crew still aboard are currently symptomatic. WHO says public risk remains low: "We believe this will be a limited outbreak if public health measures are implemented."
Investigators are zeroing in on Ushuaia, Argentina, as the outbreak's source. The Dutch couple who presented the first two cases visited sites there known to carry the Andes strain before boarding. Argentine scientists plan to analyze rodents at a local trash heap in the coming days. The WHO is also shipping 2,500 diagnostic kits to laboratories in five countries.
Iran Tightens Grip on Hormuz
Iran has created a new government agency to vet and tax ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, tightening control over one of the world's most critical energy chokepoints as ceasefire negotiations with the US continue.
The move has stranded hundreds of commercial vessels and deepened concerns about global trade as fuel prices remain elevated. Maritime experts say Iran's demands likely violate international law, while the US and allies push for US action to reopen the route.
Despite tensions, diplomacy appears active. Pakistan says a peace agreement could come soon, while Trump paused a US military effort to force open the strait — an operation Saudi Arabia refused to support, saying Washington could not use its territory or bases.
Tennessee Leads Redistricting Cascade
Tennessee became the first state to pass a new congressional map Thursday, following last week's Supreme Court ruling that weakened Voting Rights Act protections. The map breaks up a majority-Black district in Memphis to Republican advantage.
The move accelerates a national redistricting cascade. Eight states have now redrawn congressional maps since Trump pushed Texas to redistrict last year. Republicans believe they could gain as many as 13 seats from the effort; Democrats think they could gain up to 10. Louisiana, Alabama, and South Carolina are all moving toward redistricting following the SCOTUS ruling. Alabama is advancing legislation that would void its May 19 primary results if courts allow a new map.
Tennessee's Republican sponsor was direct about the motive: "This bill represents Tennessee's attempt to maximize our partisan advantage." Democrats called the Memphis district carve-up racist. Legal challenges are expected across multiple states.
