Today’s Big Story
US Advances
The United States men's national team defeated Australia 2-0 on Friday to reach the World Cup knockout stage with a match to spare, becoming the first American team since 1930 to win consecutive World Cup games.
Playing without injured star Christian Pulisic, the US took an early lead on an Australian own goal before Alex Freeman added his first World Cup score. The Americans controlled much of the match and now need only a draw against Türkiye to secure first place in Group D and a favorable path into the knockout rounds.
Pulisic remains sidelined with a calf injury, but the victory showed the U can compete without its biggest star. Coach Mauricio Pochettino said he hopes Pulisic returns soon, while emphasizing that a deep World Cup run will require contributions from the entire squad.
