UNC-Chapel Hill faculty member killed in shooting that sent campus into lockdown
The University of North Carolina was under lockdown on Monday after a shooter killed a faculty member. A suspect was captured about an hour and a half after the shooting, and an all-clear was issued two hours later. No one else was injured in the incident. UNC police and the FBI have started a joint investigation that will take several weeks. Identities and possible motives have not been released. (More)
77 percent in new poll say Biden is too old to be effective if reelected
77% of Americans said in an AP poll that President Biden is too old to be effective if reelected. The negative view of Biden’s age was held across age groups and political affiliations. About half of Americans said Trump is too old for the White House, with Democrats being more likely than Republicans to say his age is a problem. 66% support age limits for presidential candidates, 68% support limits for the House and Senate, and 67% support a hard retirement age for the Supreme Court. FEMA allocates $3B for climate change as Congress stalls on disaster fund
The Biden Administration said it will provide nearly $3 billion in funding for communities across the US to reduce their exposure to climate-change-related extreme weather. The money will help bolster the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s disaster relief fund, which will run out of money this fall, and assist many regions recovering from recent weather and climate disasters. France to ban Islamic dress in schools
France is banning students from wearing abayas - full-length dresses worn by some Muslim women - in its state-run schools. The new rule adds to the list of religious signs or dress that France has disallowed in schools since the 19th century. It has been updating the law over the years to reflect its changing population. 500 flights cancelled as UK’s air traffic control system hit by "nightmare scenario"
The UK’s air traffic control system had a technical problem on Monday that affected all airlines in the UK resulting in at least 500 canceled flights. The problem has been fixed, but it will take some time for flights to return to normal. Many passengers were stuck on the tarmac or held up in airport buildings around the world. The glitch struck during a public holiday in parts of Britain, making the problem worse. (More)

Ukraine has captured a key village on the southern Zaporizhzhia front, the latest step in splitting the Russian lines that defend the overland route to Crimea. The breakthrough has brought Ukraine into contact with Russia’s main defense line in the South. Live worm found in Australian woman’s brain in world-first discovery
An Australian neurosurgeon pulled 3-inch-long parasitic round worm from a patient’s brain. The woman began experiencing symptoms of forgetfulness and depression in 2021 and an MRI confirmed brain abnormalities that required surgery. The doctors couldn’t identify the worm and sent it to a lab that confirmed it was a type of parasite usually found in pythons. The patient is alive and well, but the case highlights the danger of diseases and infections passing from animals to humans. (More)
Google Flights will now tell you when it’s the cheapest time to book
Google Flights released a new feature yesterday that helps users find the best time to book. The feature will use past data trends to show travelers when prices have been lowest for their chosen destination on selected dates. Some flights will also have a price guarantee badge, which means Google believes the flight won’t get cheaper and will refund the difference if the fare decreases before departure. (More)
NASA releases first US pollution map images from new instrument launched to space
NASA released the first data maps from a new device that tracks air pollution from space. The images show high levels of major pollutants, like nitrogen dioxide - a byproduct of burning fossil fuels - hovering over parts of North America. The concentrations of the chemicals increase during high traffic times but can’t be tracked accurately during cloudy conditions or at night. (More)
