U.N. agency in Gaza fires staff over alleged involvement in Oct. 7 attack
The main U.N. agency aiding Palestinians in Gaza, UNRWA, has fired multiple employees following allegations of their involvement in the Oct. 7 attack by Hamas in Israel.
UNRWA said it fired several people and ordered an investigation into the information given to them by Israel. Neither Israel nor the UNRWA has provided details on the nature of the allegations.
The US State Department revealed that 12 UNRWA were allegedly involved and has since cut off funding to the organizations while they review the claims.
The UNRWA plays a critical role in the relief efforts in Gaza. It estimates that 1.9 million people are sheltering in or near its facilities. The agency also coordinates food and medical supply deliveries into the territory.
