Court Skeptical of Tariffs

  • Supreme Court justices appeared skeptical Wednesday of President Trump's authority to impose sweeping tariffs under a 1977 emergency law. Chief Justice John Roberts noted 'the imposition of taxes on Americans' has always 'been the core power of Congress.'

  • The legal question is whether the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, which allows presidents to 'regulate' imports during emergencies, extends to imposing global tariffs. The law doesn't mention tariffs, and the Constitution assigns tariff power to Congress. No president had used IEEPA for tariffs until Trump this year.

  • The case involves reciprocal tariffs ranging from 10-34% and 25% tariffs on Canada, China, and Mexico over fentanyl concerns. The tariffs have raised $89 billion. If overturned, the government could face demands to refund businesses.

Shein Stumbles in France

  • France threatened to suspend Chinese e-commerce giant Shein's website on Wednesday after authorities found firearms and sex dolls with childlike features listed for sale. Shein has 48 hours to remove the items before it’s suspended.

  • The threat came as Shein opened its first retail store in Paris, drawing shoppers and protesters. In response to the government's findings, the company suspended listings from third-party vendors, launched an investigation into how the items bypassed screening, and pledged to work with French authorities.

  • France is separately moving to regulate fast fashion platforms like Shein, Temu, and AliExpress with advertising bans and taxes on imported parcels, citing environmental damage and social costs from cheap, low-quality imports. Shein also faces criticism over forced labor allegations in its supply chains.

Melatonin Study

  • A new study suggests that long-term use of melatonin supplements, often promoted as a safe sleep aid, may be linked to an increased risk of heart failure and death among adults with chronic insomnia.

  • Researchers reviewed electronic health records from 130,828 adults. They found that those who used melatonin for at least a year were about 90% more likely to develop heart failure over five years (4.6% vs. 2.7%) compared with matched non-users. They were also 3.5 times more likely to be hospitalized for heart failure (19.0% vs. 6.6%) and nearly twice as likely to die from any cause (7.8% vs. 4.3%).

  • Researchers stressed that the study shows correlation, not causation. Melatonin supplements are not FDA regulated in the US and vary in strength and purity across brands. Further research is needed before confirming its long-term safety.
