Subway agrees to be sold to Jimmy John’s owner Roark Capital
Roark Capital bought Subway on Thursday for $9.6 billion. Roark owns Inspire Brands, which include Arby’s, Dunkin’, and Jimmy John’s among other quick service brands. Subway will continue to operate without Roark’s involvement and plans to increase new openings by 35% by the end of 2023. (More)
T-Mobile to lay off 5,000 employees
T-Mobile announced it will fire 5,000 employees, or around 7% of its workforce. The cuts will largely affect corporate and back-office jobs. The company cited the uncertain economic landscape for the reductions. It also said that attracting and retaining customers is much more expensive than it was a few quarters ago. (More)

Businessman Vivek Ramaswamy’s rise in the GOP polls made him a target during the first Republican debate. He was called a rookie, rebuked for having no foreign policy experience, and accused of talking like AI tool ChatGPT. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis was the highest polling contender on stage but he seemed to fade into the background as Ramaswamy took most of the attacks and fought with others onstage. None of the debaters established themselves as a credible threat to Trump with six of the eight candidates saying they would support Trump as GOP nominee even if he’s convicted of any crime. (More)
75 Pittsburgh officers on leave after shootout and standoff during eviction attempt
At least 75 Pittsburg law enforcement officers are being placed on leave after a six-and-a-half hour shootout with a man they were trying to serve an eviction notice to. Police found the suspect dead after the hours long standoff. It is standard practice for officers to leave after firing their weapons or being involved in a traumatic incident. They will all go through a psych eval before being cleared to go back to work. (More)
Trump surrenders at Georgia jail in election case
Former President Donald Trump surrendered and was booked into Georgia’s Fulton Country Jail on Thursday on charges linked to his alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election. This is Trump’s fourth arrest this year but differs from the other three in which he was booked at a court house instead of a jail. A criminal mug shot was also captured, making him the first current or former US president to have one taken. (More)

Worries over seafood safety mount as Japan releases Fukushima water into the Pacific
Japan began releasing treated radioactive water from its damaged Fukushima nuclear plant into the Pacific Ocean on Thursday. The area is known for its seafood and local fishermen are worried prices will fall. China announced it is expanding an existing ban on seafood imports from Fukushima to include all of Japan, citing health concerns. Japan says they are making the water safe in part by diluting it with seawater and releasing it very slowly. (More)
Quebec judge gives go-ahead for lawsuit over sterilization of Indigenous women
A Quebec judge approved the class action lawsuit over the forced sterilization of Indigenous women in the Canadian province. Two Atikamekw women brought the lawsuit against three doctors they accuse of cutting their fallopian tubes during delivery. Neither said they consented to the procedure. (More)
Saudi Arabia, UAE, and Iran among six countries invited to join BRICS group
Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and Argentina have been invited to become members of the BRICS group of developing nations. The original group, consisting of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, makes up 40% of the world’s population and over a quarter of the world’s GDP. The new additions include three of the world’s biggest oil producers - Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Iran - which will strengthen the groups influence on the global economy. (More)

“Barbie” is now the highest-grossing domestic film release in 2023
“Barbie” is the highest grossing movie in the US this year topping $575.3 million. It surpassed “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” which had previously held the title with its $574 million haul. “Barbie” is also gaining on Mario to be the the highest-grossing global release this year at $1.3 billion to Mario’s $1.35. Angels' Shohei Ohtani has elbow tear, won't pitch again this season
Shohei Ohtani has a tear in a ligament in his right elbow and won’t pitch again this season. The tear was confirmed through an MRI, which often requires Tommy John surgery and would keep him from playing for the entire 2024 season. Before the injury Ohtani was expected to sign a $500-plus million contract in free agency. (More)
Spain chief Rubiales to quit over unsolicited kiss of Hermoso
Spanish football federation president Luis Rubiales plans to resign after he kissed Spanish midfielder Jenni Hermoso on the lips at the World Cup Final. The news came quickly after FIFA opened a disciplinary investigation into the the incident. His initial reaction was to label critics of his behavior “idiots” but later apologized after the backlash grew. (More)

CDC launches effort to bolster hospital sepsis programs
The CDC announced a new initiative that will help support sepsis teams at US hospitals after new data found that a third of patients who die in hospitals had sepsis while hospitalized. Currently many US facilities do not have the resources to spot sepsis and treat it quickly. The condition happens when the body’s immune system responds to an infection in an extreme way, causing damage to tissue and organs. (More)
Mass die-off strikes endangered emperor penguin chicks across 4 of 5 West Antarctica colonies
Emperor penguin chicks have suffered a mass die-off in West Antarctica due to low sea ice this year. Scientists have never seen emperor penguins fail to breed at this scale in a single season. The study supports predictions that 98% of emperor penguins could become quasi-extinct by 2100, meaning their numbers may be too small to maintain viable populations. (More)
Big Tech braces for EU Digital Services Act regulations
Over a dozen of the world’s biggest tech firms will now be subject to the EU’s Digital Services ACT (DSA) that imposes new rules on content moderation, user privacy, and transparency. The firms are now responsible for preventing harmful content from spreading, banning or limiting certain user-targeting practices, and sharing some internal data with regulators. Companies in breach of the DSA will face a fine up to 6% of its global revenue, and face a total European ban for repeat offenses. (More)
