Trump’s Georgia Election Case Paused
The Georgia Court of Appeals has paused the court proceedings in former President Trump's 2020 election subversion case
The pause will allow the court to review several appeals, including whether Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis can stay on the case. The proceedings are expected to be on hold until at least October when the appeals court will hear arguments about Trump’s bid to remove Willis from the case.
Trump and his co-defendants have claimed that Willis' relationship with then-special prosecutor Nathan Wade created a conflict of interest, which she denies. Judge Scott McAfee ruled in March that Willis could stay on the case if Wade stepped down, which he did immediately.
The pause means that the Georgia case is unlikely to go to trial before the November election. The delay benefits Trump, who was recently convicted on 34 felony counts in New York. He has been trying to delay court proceedings in his various criminal cases until after the 2024 election.
Meet the Shy, Invasive Joro Spider
Joro spiders could reach new parts of the East Coast this summer.
Nicknamed for their impressive golden webs, Joro spiders utilize a unique travel method – ballooning. They release silk strands that catch the breeze, allowing them to parachute and spread to new habitats.
Despite being invasive, Joro spiders appear to pose a minimal environmental threat and won’t outcompete local species for resources. However, their tolerance for colder temperatures might give them an edge over similar native species. While technically venomous like most spiders, Joro spiders are timid and their fangs are unlikely to penetrate human skin.
The management of invasive species like Joro spiders sparks debate among experts. Eliminating Joro spiders risks harming look-alike native species, such as the black and yellow garden spider. The spiders are one example of the many invasive species unintentionally introduced across the U.S., primarily due to human activity.
China is Trying to Recruit Western Military Pilots
The U.S. and its intelligence allies have warned that China is trying to recruit current and former Western military pilots.
The report claims China hopes to strengthen its air power and learn Western aviation tactics. The warning came from the Five Eyes intelligence partners, which include the U.S., the UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) uses private companies in South Africa and China to hire Western pilots. These pilots come from countries like Canada, France, Germany, the UK, Australia, and the U.S. The Five Eyes have advised military members to be cautious of job offers from companies that may be secretly linked to China.
The U.S. and its allies have taken steps to counter this threat by restricting certain companies and banning former military members from working with China. However, several U.S. military members have tried to sell information to China. Former Marine Daniel Duggan was arrested in Australia for allegedly training PLA pilots, and U.S. Army analyst Korbein Schultz was charged with conspiring to sell defense information to China.
