*Tragedy in Nashville. Three children and 3 adult employees were shot and killed yesterday by a female shooter at The Covenant School in Nashville, TN. The shooter was identified as Audrey Hale, a 28-year-old Nashville resident who had previously attended the school.

Go deeper: These murders come just after President Biden issued an executive order on gun control. The order is aimed at reducing gun violence by stiffening background checks to buy guns, educating the masses on safe storage of firearms, and addressing the loss or theft of firearms during shipping.

Some numbers for perspective: There have been 89 school shootings — defined as anytime a gun is fired on school property — in the U.S. in 2023. That’s eighty-nine shootings in eighty-six days. According to K-12 Shooting Database, there were 303 such incidents last year — the most since the database was created in 1970.

*Student loan forgiveness at risk. Three Republican Senators are attempting to overturn President Biden’s student loan forgiveness plan. The plan proposes to forgive borrowers with up to $20,000 in federal loans. The Congressional Budget office estimated that funding the forgiveness plan would cost $400 billion dollars over the next 30 years. Additionally, if reversed, student loan payments that have been on pause since the beginning of Covid-19 will resume.

*Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu halted his plans to overhaul the judicial system saying he “wanted to avoid civil war'“ by opening up discussions with the opposing political party.

Why is Israel protesting? Netanyahu’s proposal would give him and his allies final say in the appointment of the nation’s judges. Parliament, which is under his control, would also be given power to reverse Supreme Court decisions and limit the court’s ability to review laws. Fun Fact—Netanyahu is currently on trial for corruption charges.

Zoom out: The entire country ground to a halt as one labor union called for their 800,000 strong membership to strike. Departing international flights were grounded, stranding thousands of travelers and the main doctors union said its members were poised to strike as well. Basically the entire country seriously opposes the proposed judicial overhaul. Read more about it here. The delay has calmed the public outcry for now, but Israeli citizens have made it clear they won’t hesitate to bring the fight should the overhaul move forward.

** Germany follows suit and strikes too. Germany’s transportation infrastructure also came to a dead stop Monday when union members participated in a one day walk out over wage increase demands. Inflations is hitting Europe’s largest economy pretty hard too.
