Today’s Big Story
Is Your Drinking Water Toxic?

On Tuesday, The Environmental Protection Agency proposed the first national water standard limiting the amount of toxic “forever chemicals” or PFAS in drinking water.
Why it matters: PFAS are linked to a broad range of health risks including low birthweight babies, liver failure, and kidney cancer. Alarmingly, they exist in hundreds of water repelling household items such as non-stick pans, cosmetics, and paint. One study suggests that PFAS could be found in 98% of the U.S. population.
The big picture: The EPA gives water agencies a 3 year window to comply with new regulation — the agency has already earmarked $2 billion dollars to help municipalities replace and update infrastructure. Reverse Osmosis filters are the most effective at ridding water of PFAS followed by carbon-based options.
