Cuba Power Outage

One of Cuba’s main power plants failed Friday.

  • The outage affected all 10 million of the island’s population. Some of the service was restored on Sunday but nearly 2 million people still don’t have power.

  • The outages, which have been worsening over the years, led the government to close schools and send state workers home to save energy, but this wasn’t enough to prevent the grid from failing.

  • Cuba’s government blames the frequent blackouts on its old, poorly maintained infrastructure and a limited fuel supply. Its main fuel supplier, Venezuela, has cut back deliveries. Cuba also blames the US embargo, which makes it hard to get spare parts for power plants.

  • Meanwhile, Hurricane Oscar hit Cuba as a Category 1 storm last night and authorities were scrambling to help citizens who have already been without A/C and food for days.

Musk Giving $1M to Swing State Voters

(Rachel Wisniewski/Reuters)

Elon Musk has promised to give $1 million to voters in swing states who sign his petition supporting free speech and gun rights.

  • In an X post, Musk wrote “Every day, from now until Nov 5, America Pac will be giving away $1M to someone in swing states who signed our free speech and right to bear arms petition!” He gave out the first check at a rally in Pennsylvania.

  • Experts in election law say Musk’s actions could violate federal laws that ban offering money to influence voting. It's illegal to pay someone to vote or register, and any financial reward, like cash or prizes, is prohibited.

  • Musk's offer is being compared to a $1 million lottery for voters.

  • Musk has actively supported Trump’s campaign, recently donating almost $75 million through his political group, America Pac.

Israel announced it will target Hezbollah's financial unit, al-Qard al-Hassan (AQAH), with strikes across Lebanon, including Beirut.

  • AQAH, which supports Hezbollah operatives and helps buy weapons, is also used by everyday Lebanese citizens. AQAH is cash-based so Israel's goal is to disrupt Hezbollah’s financial operations, turning their cash into "trash" through the strikes.

  • The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah has escalated into a full-blown war, leading to increased strikes on Beirut's southern neighborhoods. This area is a Hezbollah stronghold but also home to many civilians.

  • Israel’s announcement came a day after US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin urged Israel to reduce strikes in civilian areas because civilian casualties are “far too high.”
