India Strikes Pakistan
India launched missile strikes into Pakistani territory early Wednesday, hitting multiple locations in Pakistan-controlled Kashmir and Punjab province.
The strikes killed 31 people and injured 57 others, according to Pakistani leaders. India said the strikes only hit “terror camps” and no civilian or military targets. Exchanges of fire across the border killed five more Pakistanis later in the day.
The attack comes in response to last month's massacre of 26 tourists in Indian-controlled Kashmir, which India blames Pakistan for supporting. Pakistan has denied any involvement, and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the strikes as "cowardly," promising a "robust response" to what he called an "act of war."
Pakistan claims its air force shot down five Indian jets in retaliation, though no details were provided. The missile strikes hit several locations, including a mosque in Bahawalpur, where civilian casualties occurred.
World leaders fear the regional skirmishes could escalate into a broader conflict. Both Pakistan and India had nuclear weapons the last time they went to war in 1999, but the fighting remained conventional.
Tyre Nichols Case
A jury found three former Memphis police officers not guilty on all charges in Tyre Nichols' beating death after 8½ hours of deliberation.
The brutal beating of Nichols, a 29-year-old father and FedEx worker, was caught on police cameras as officers pepper-sprayed, kicked, and punched him less than 100 yards from his mother's home during a January 2023 traffic stop. The footage sparked nationwide protests when released.
Defense attorneys claimed Nichols resisted arrest and could have had "superhuman strength" from drugs, while prosecutors argued officers beat him to death, then tried covering it up. Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, and Justin Smith walked free on state charges including second-degree murder and kidnapping.
Despite the state acquittal, all three officers still face significant federal prison time from previous convictions. Bean and Smith face up to 20 years, while Haley could receive a life sentence with no possibility of parole in the federal system.
T. Rex: American Icon with Asian Roots
The Tyrannosaurus rex evolved in North America, but its ancestors likely migrated from Asia, according to new research.
T. rex lived between 67-66 million years ago during the Late Cretaceous period, growing up to 12.5 feet tall and 41 feet long. Most fossils have been found in Montana, South Dakota, and Alberta, Canada—an area that was once an island continent called Laramidia.
Despite being found only in North America, T. rex's origin has sparked fierce debate among paleontologists about its origin. Researchers analyzed fossil locations, evolutionary trees, and ancient climate patterns to solve the mystery. Their conclusion: T. rex evolved from smaller tyrannosaurs whose ancestors migrated from Asia to North America around 72 million years ago when falling sea levels created a land bridge between the continents in the Bering Strait.
The team also cracked how T. rex grew so massive. After a global warming event 92 million years ago called the Cretaceous Thermal Maximum, temperatures cooled significantly. The cooling trend likely wiped out other big dinosaurs, giving T. rex and its relatives a chance to bulk up and take over the vacant real estate in the food chain.
