US stocks finished their worst week in five years Friday after China announced 34% tariffs on all US imports starting April 10, matching President Trump's tariffs on Chinese goods.

  • The S&P 500 and Nasdaq each fell about 6%, the Dow dropped 5.5%, and European markets sank roughly 4%. It is the worst market decline since the 2020 COVID crisis.

  • The trade conflict between the world's two largest economies has also rattled global commodity markets, with oil prices falling to their lowest level since 2021. Even a strong US jobs report showing better-than-expected hiring failed to calm investor fears about future economic impacts.

  • Stocks of US companies with significant Chinese business faced the heaviest losses, with DuPont dropping 12.7% after China announced an anti-trust investigation into its subsidiary, while GE Healthcare, which gets 12% of its revenue from China, fell 16%.

  • Market analysts hope for tariff reductions after negotiations, but Trump has given mixed signals. On Friday, he claimed Vietnam "wants to cut their Tariffs down to ZERO if they can make an agreement with the US." However, he has also said Americans may feel "some pain" but insists long term goals, like bringing manufacturing jobs back to the US, are worth it.
