American workers are demanding almost $80,000 a year to take a new job

American workers want $78,645 in order to switch jobs, according to an employment survey by the New York Federal Reserve. That’s an increase of 8% from a year ago and the highest level ever since the reserve started tracking data in 2014. Employers are trying to keep pace with the wage demands and increased the average full time offer to $69,475, a 14% bump since last year. (More)

New York, California each lost $1T in assets as financial firms fled south

Giant banks and big tech firms leaving California and New York over the past few years have cost the states nearly $1 trillion apiece in managed assets. Their relocations have further stretched city and state finances by decreasing tax revenue. More than 370 investment companies moved their headquarters to a new state, favoring places like Florida and Texas, which have no income tax. (More)

Larry Rudolph, wealthy dentist convicted of killing wife on African safari, sentenced to life in prison

A wealthy dentist convicted of killing his wife on an African safari was sentenced to life in prison. He also owes more than $15 million in financial penalties for mail fraud for cashing in $5 million in insurance policies for his wife. Prosecutors allege his goal was to use the insurance money for a lavish retirement with his longtime girlfriend. She was sentenced to 17 years in prison in June for being an accessory to the murder. 850 people still missing from Hawaii fires as Bidens travel to Maui

850 are still missing from the wildfires earlier this month. 114 have been confirmed dead and 27 of them have been identified. 1,285 people originally reported as missing have been located safe. The new death toll figures came as Joe and Jill Biden traveled to Maui on Monday. The president stressed the federal recovery efforts that are currently underway and promised someone from his administration will be responsible for long-term recovery efforts. (More)

Trump’s bond set at $200,000 in Georgia election-related case

Donald Trump agreed to a $200,000 bail bond in the criminal case charging him with trying to illegally overturn the 2020 presidential election results in Georgia. The order also limits his ability to use social media to attack witnesses or co-defendants in the case. Trump and the other defendants have been given until Aug. 25th to surrender voluntarily in Atlanta. Update: Trump said he’ll surrender on Thursday via his Truth Social app. (More)

A former neonatal nurse was sentenced to life in prison for the murders of 7 babies

Former neonatal nurse Lucy Letby, who was convicted of murdering seven babies in her care and trying to kill six others in a UK hospital, was sentenced to life in prison with no chance of release. She was given the most severe punishment possible under British law, which doesn’t allow the death penalty. Only three other women have received as harsh of a sentence in the UK. (More)

Ecuadorians reject oil drilling in the Amazon, ending operations in protected area

Ecuadorians voted against drilling for oil in a protected area of the Amazon. The decision will require the state oil company to stop work in the region. Yasuni National Park is home to two uncontacted tribes and was designated a world biosphere reserve by the UN in 1989. The vote took place alongside the country’s presidential election, which will be decided in a runoff between leftist candidate Luisa González and right-wing contender Daniel Noboa. (More)

Hundreds of migrants killed by Saudi border guards 

Saudi border guards are accused of killing hundreds of migrants along the Yemen-Saudi border in a new report by the Human Rights Watch. The report contains graphic details from migrants who say they were shot at and sometimes targeted by explosive weapons as they tried to cross into Saudi Arabia. It also estimates that a minimum of 655 have been killed, but the actual number is likely in the thousands. The Saudis have denied that the killings were systematic or large-scale. (More)

Coming soon to a theater near you: $4 movie tickets

Movie tickets will drop to $4 at select theaters nationwide this Sunday. The Cinema Foundation announced that Aug. 27 is the second annual National Cinema day for the US. More than 3,000 movie theatres will participate. The list of those theatres can be found here. (More)

Michigan self-imposes 3-game ban for Jim Harbaugh

Michigan self-imposed a three-game suspension for coach Jim Harbaugh to begin the 2023 season, stemming from recruiting violations during a COVID-19 dead period. He is currently facing more heat for being dishonest when questioned by the NCAA about the alleged violations. Insiders say Michigan is suspending Harbaugh in hopes of lessening the final punishment from the NCAA. (More)

Tennessee zoo says it has welcomed a rare spotless giraffe

A Tennessee zoo welcomed a rare giraffe that doesn’t have any spots. The baby giraffe was born at Brights Zoo in Limestone, Tennessee on July 31. She is believed to be the only solid-colored reticulated giraffe in the world. The zoo hopes the headline-making birth will bring awareness to the species’ struggle in the wild. Wild giraffe populations have fallen 40% in the last 3 decades. (More)

Screen time linked with developmental delays in toddlerhood, study finds

A new study has found that screen time for a baby can quickly affect their development. One to four hours of screen time at age 1 is linked with higher risks of developmental delays in communication, fine motor, problem-solving, and personal and social skills by age 2. Doctors say this research is unique because it studied the issue with several years of follow-up data, noting there hasn’t been many prior studies to do so. (More)

The voice of Mario is stepping away from the character

Charles Martinet, the voice of Mario for over 25 years, will no longer be voicing the character. He has voiced the character since the ‘90’s in games like Super Mario 64, Super Mario Odyssey, and Super Mario Galaxy. Nintendo said he will move into a brand-new role of Mario Ambassador. (More)
