Surgeon General Urges for Warning Labels on Social Media

Surgeon General Vivek Murthy is pushing for a warning label on social media platforms to advise users that social media has been connected to mental health risks for teens.

  • He proposed a surgeon general's warning label, similar to those on tobacco and alcohol products, be placed on social media platforms. Murthy cited studies showing that warning labels on tobacco products can increase awareness and change user behavior.

  • Murthy said warning labels alone isn’t enough to make social media safer for adolescents. Murthy also called for new laws to protect young people from online harassment, abuse, and harmful content.

  • Murthy advised schools and parents to create phone-free environments, especially during meals, before bed, and at social events. He recommended that parents wait until their children finish middle school before allowing them to use social media and work with other families to establish shared rules. He also believes that the issues with social media are due to the lack of safety measures and accountability, not a failure of willpower or parenting.

Netanyahu Disbans War Cabinet

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has dissolved the six-member war Cabinet after Benny Gantz, a key member and former general, left the emergency government.

  • The move follows pressure from ultranationalist ministers who wanted to join the war Cabinet, which could have strained international relations. Netanyahu plans to hold sensitive consultations in a smaller group called "the kitchen cabinet."

  • Gantz and his partner Gadi Eisenkot left the government last week, over Netanyahu's failure to form a war strategy. Netanyahu has been criticized for the security failures during Hamas' October 7 attacks but has gained political support by resisting pressure from international partners. Recent polls show Netanyahu's Likud party gaining over Gantz's National Unity Party.

  • Meanwhile, more than 37,000 people have died in Gaza since Israel's offensive began after the Hamas attacks. Around 60,000 people in northern Israel and 74,500 in Lebanon have been displaced. Israel continues air strikes against Hezbollah in Lebanon, which demands an end to Israel's offensive in Gaza before halting its fire.

Celtics are NBA Champs Once Again

The Boston Celtics claimed their 18th NBA championship, defeating the Dallas Mavericks 106-88 in Game 5 of the Finals.

  • The Celtics set the tone early, closing the first quarter with a 9-0 run and maintaining their lead throughout the game. This is the Celtics' first title since 2008, and it gives them the most championships in NBA history, surpassing their longtime rivals, the Los Angeles Lakers.

  • Strong performances from Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown drove the Celtics' win. Tatum led with 31 points, 11 assists, and 8 rebounds, while Brown contributed 21 points, 8 rebounds, and 6 assists, earning Finals MVP honors. The team showcased their defensive prowess and three-point shooting, with key contributions from Jrue Holiday and Payton Pritchard.

  • The championship solidified the legacies of Tatum and Brown, who had faced criticism for previous playoff shortcomings. With young stars and strategic leadership from GM Brad Stevens and head coach Joe Mazzulla, the Celtics are expected to be in contention for the foreseeable future.
