The Shadow Docket
The New York Times obtained 16 pages of secret Supreme Court memos showing how Chief Justice John Roberts pushed colleagues into an emergency ruling in February 2016 that legal experts say gave birth to the court's modern shadow docket.
The shadow docket is a secretive emergency track that allows the court to make major rulings without oral arguments, written reasoning, or lower court review. In five days of internal memos, Roberts drove a 5-4 vote to halt President Obama's Clean Power Plan before any lower court had weighed in. Justice Kagan warned it was "unprecedented," while Justice Kennedy cast the deciding vote in a three-sentence note.
Four days later, Justice Scalia died — had the court waited, the vote would have deadlocked. The shadow docket has since granted Trump 20 victories, including deportations under the Alien Enemies Act and removing protections from Venezuelan immigrants. The Times confirmed the memos' authenticity with people familiar with the deliberations; however, the justices did not respond to questions.
Shreveport Mass Shooting
A man shot and killed eight children between the ages of 1 and 14 at a home in Shreveport, Louisiana, early Sunday morning before fleeing in a carjacked vehicle and being shot and killed by police. Seven of the eight children were his own. The eighth was shot on the roof of the home while trying to escape.
Suspect Shamar Elkins also shot his wife and a woman believed to be his girlfriend, both seriously injured, before police responded just after 6 a.m. following reports of a domestic disturbance. A teenager was also injured. Motive remains under investigation.
Heading into Sunday, there had been at least six mass murders in the US in 2026, according to the Gun Violence Archive, which defines mass murder as four or more victims killed.
Eddie Murphy Honored
Eddie Murphy received the American Film Institute's Life Achievement Award Saturday night at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. The tribute raised $2.5 million for AFI's nonprofit education programs and will air as a Netflix special on May 31.
Murphy, 65, rose from a teenage stand-up sensation to one of the most commercially dominant performers in Hollywood history. He joined SNL at 19, became a breakout star, and went on to anchor blockbusters including Beverly Hills Cop, Coming to America, and the Shrek franchise — one of animation's highest-grossing series.
Spike Lee, Chris Rock, Dave Chappelle, and Martin Lawrence all spoke. Rock captured the room's sentiment: "There is no us without you." Chappelle revealed Murphy encouraged him to revisit Chappelle's Show — and may even join the project.
