Today’s Big Story

More Than A Third Of Americans Worked From Home On Average in 2022.

Americans continue to work from home, even with the pandemic long behind us.

Why it matters: With over a third of the workforce staying at home, the trickle down effects on different parts of the economy have been massive.

  • The demand for housing has skyrocketed, which has outpriced many homebuyers in formerly affordable suburban areas.

  • With employees working from home, companies have vacated office spaces.

  • Spending plummeted at businesses that cater to those office districts.

Big picture: The Bureau of Labor Statistics annual time use survey showed that 35% of American workers worked from home on an average day last year, up from 22% a decade earlier.

  • 58% of Americans had the opportunity to work at home at least 1 day a week, according to McKinsey’s American Opportunity Survey.

  • The work-from-home movement is more common among those with college degrees, 54% of grads work from home according to the BLS.

Yes, but: Peak work from home numbers - nearly 40% in 2021 - may be behind us.

Bottom line: A 10-second commute and working in pajamas are two work-from-home benefits that many American find non-negotiable.
