New Gel May Regrow Tooth Enamel

• Researchers at the University of Nottingham have developed an experimental dental gel that may be able to rebuild damaged tooth enamel, offering a potential new way to treat tooth decay, erosion and sensitivity. Unlike fluoride treatments, the gel uses specially designed proteins to encourage minerals naturally found in saliva to regrow enamel in a structure that closely resembles the original tooth.

• Once applied, the material fills tiny cracks and damaged areas before guiding calcium and phosphate into organized crystal growth that bonds with the existing enamel. In laboratory testing, the regenerated tissue withstood brushing, chewing, and acidic foods with mechanical properties similar to healthy natural enamel.

• Because enamel cannot naturally regenerate once it is lost, current treatments can only strengthen or protect what remains. While more testing is needed before the technology reaches dental offices, researchers have launched a startup company to commercialize the treatment and hope to introduce an initial product as early as next year.
