Big Stories

Israel Strikes Qatar

  • Israel struck Hamas leadership in Doha on Tuesday in an unprecedented attack on Qatar, which has mediated ceasefire negotiations since October 2023. Explosions were heard in residential areas near foreign embassies. Netanyahu called it an independent operation targeting Hamas's senior officials stationed in Qatar.

  • The operation was in retaliation for Monday's Jerusalem bus stop shooting that killed six people. Hamas claimed responsibility for the shooting shortly before the Doha strike occurred. A Hamas spokesperson said the strike killed five of its members but missed its leadership.

  • Qatar condemned the attack as a violation of international law and says it has a right to retaliate, while the UAE and Saudi Arabia criticized Israel despite recent diplomatic warming. The US received minimal advance notice and issued shelter-in-place orders for embassy staff.

Sinaloa Cartel Arrests

  • The DEA arrested 617 people in a coordinated weeklong operation targeting the Sinaloa cartel across 23 US divisions and seven foreign regions. The August operation seized 480 kilograms of fentanyl, over 700,000 counterfeit pills, tons of methamphetamine and cocaine, plus $12.8 million in assets and 420 firearms.

  • Sinaloa operates as the world's largest drug trafficking organization with members in at least 40 countries. DEA Administrator Cole said operations will continue until the Sinaloa cartel is 'dismantled from top to bottom.'

  • The raids follow Trump's designation of eight cartels as terrorist organizations in February. Cartel founder Ismael 'El Mayo' Zambada pleaded guilty to federal charges in August, and Mexico recently transferred 26 high-ranking gang members to US custody.

Record Job Revision

  • Labor Department data showed 911,000 fewer jobs were created from March 2024 to March 2025 than initially reported, the largest downward revision on record since 2002. The annual adjustment is based on updated tax data and business census information.

  • The revision shows the labor market was weaker than initially reported, with most of the decline occurring before Trump took office. Economists say the data strengthen the case for Federal Reserve interest rate cuts to support economic growth.

  • White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt called the revision proof that 'Biden's economy was a disaster and the BLS is broken,' demanding Fed Chair Powell cut rates immediately. Trump has been critical of the agency's data collection methods and recently fired some of its leadership.
