Today’s Big Story

Putin could end up behind bars. On Friday, the International Crimes Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant against Russian President Vladimir Putin for war crimes, holding him personally responsible for the abduction and deportation of at least, 100 Ukrainian Children.

Why It Matters: This is first time that the court has issued a warrant against a leader from one of the 5 permanent members of the U.N Security Council. The warrant limits Putin’s ability to travel to the 123 member nations of the ICC.

So when’s Putin going to the big house? Unfortunately, Russia’s big boss is unlikely to be arrested anytime soon. One of two things has to happen:

  1. Putin would have to travel to an ICC member nation and be detained (he won’t).

  2. Russia or one of their few remaining allies would have to arrest and turn him over (they won’t).

Well… what was the point? Putin won’t be able to attend international summit meetings hosted by ICC member nations and his political reputation will be forever damaged. The consequences may seem a little anticlimactic, however, his influence on the world geopolitical stage will be lessened. All bets are on Putin staying close to home for the foreseeable future.

*UBS buys Credit Suisse for half off. On Sunday, UBS reached a deal to buy its competitor Credit Suisse for $3.25 billion — 60% less than the bank was worth when markets closed Friday. The takeover is the latest effort by giant banks to calm down the public and restore faith in the banking industry.

*Frozen berries = Hepatitis A. Frozen strawberries have been linked to 5 cases of Hepatitis A resulting in two hospitalizations in Washington state. The Scenic Fruit Company has recalled its strawberries from Costco, Aldi, KeHE, Vital Choice Seafoods, and PCC Markets, as well as its frozen organic tropical blend from Trader Joe’s. Pro tip: Get a headstart on spring cleaning by burning your frozen strawberries.

*Trump’s future is looking stormy. A Manhattan district attorney is likely to file criminal charges against former U.S. President Donald Trump for paying off Story Daniels to keep quiet about their affair in 2006. Trump will be the first sitting or former president in U.S. history to face criminal charges. Unsurprisingly, he isn’t taking it very well and has called on his supporters to “protest and take the country back”. Things didn’t work out so well last time he tried to rally the troops.
