Private plane crashes near D.C.
A business jet that flew off-course over the nation’s capital Sunday afternoon caused the military to scramble fighter jets before it crashed in Virginia. The fighter jets caused a loud sonic boom that could be heard across the capital district.
Details: The Federal Aviation Administration says the plane took off from Tennessee and was headed for Long Island, New York, but made a 180-degree turn once it reached the island and flew a straight path toward Washington D.C. before crash-landing in Virginia. Six F-16 fighter jets were scrambled to intercept the private plane and found the pilot slumped over and unresponsive.
It took Virginia state authorities four hours to locate the site of the crash where they found no survivors. Businessman and owner of the plane, John Rumpel, said his daughter, 2-year-old granddaughter, nanny, and pilot were aboard the flight.
What’s next? The FAA and NTSB are working to discover the cause of the crash. The incident has drawn parallels to the 1999 crash of a Learjet that lost cabin pressure and flew unguided across the country with professional golfer Payne Stewart on board. The jet crashed in South Dakota and six people died.
