Pope Diagnosed With Cancer
Pope Leo XIV was diagnosed with lung cancer Tuesday after surgeons removed the lower lobe of his right lung at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital.
Doctors operated after a recent checkup revealed a small growth. Tissue examined during surgery confirmed adenocarcinoma, which is a common form of lung cancer. The Vatican said the operation finished successfully without complications and Leo woke normally afterward.
The 71-year-old pope is resting in his hospital room and is expected to remain hospitalized for about a week. His public audiences have been canceled through October 20. Further test results will help determine whether additional treatment is needed.
Guilfoyle Resigns
Kimberly Guilfoyle resigned as U.S. ambassador to Greece Tuesday after the White House asked her to step down over allegations that she sought financial favors and misused her diplomatic position.
The Wall Street Journal reported that Guilfoyle asked a Trump donor to pay a $100,000 credit-card bill before her confirmation hearing and promised access to administration officials. Her lawyers denied wrongdoing and said she was seeking unpaid fees for appearances and speeches that predated her nomination. They also said her private-plane travel followed State Department guidance.
The State Department’s inspector general is examining the allegations according to an official cited by AP. Whether a formal investigation has begun is unclear. Guilfoyle denied the allegations and said she would defend her reputation.
RJ Mitte Dies
“Breaking Bad” actor and disability-rights advocate RJ Mitte died Monday at 34 in Brownsville, Texas. His publicist later confirmed that he died by suicide.
Mitte was 14 when he was cast as Walter White Jr. opposite Bryan Cranston. Like his character, he had cerebral palsy, which affects movement and muscle control. He drew on that experience throughout the show’s five seasons as he portrayed a teenager whose family unraveled around his father’s drug business.
He went on to appear in “Switched at Birth” and other projects while advocating for performers with disabilities. Mitte also served as an ambassador for United Cerebral Palsy and Shriners Children’s.
