Climate

Phoenix is sizzling hot

Allie Carl/Axios

Phoenix’s hot streak has gone from unusually hot to record-breaking as temperatures topped 110°F for the 19th consecutive day.

Driving the news: No other major city - defined as the 25 most populous cities in the U.S. - has had a stretch of 110-degree days longer than Phoenix, according to historian Christopher Burt of the Weather Company.

  • Nighttime temperatures haven’t provided any relief, with lows not dipping under 90 degrees for 9 straight days.

Big picture: The southwestern and southern U.S. are dealing with punishing heat waves that left 104 million Americans under extreme heat alerts on Tuesday.

  • The triple-digit daytime temps and unrelenting hot nights that make it difficult for people to cool down, pose serious health risks.

  • Young, elderly, sick, and homeless people are at the highest risk for heat-related illness, but even healthy individuals can fall victim to such high temperatures.

  • Phoenix city park workers said they have been finding people passed out in the grass from heat exhaustion.

Zoom out: The U.S. isn’t the only place that’s suffering from intense heat. Europe, the Middle East, and southern parts of Asia are also struggling.
