The Business of Being Forever Young

Consumers are spending a lot on the growing longevity industry, which includes things like spas, special food subscriptions, gym memberships, and pills.

  • The wellness industry is huge, worth nearly $500 billion in the U.S. and $2 trillion globally. However, there's a big gap between what rich people can afford and what is available to everyone else. Many of these wellness products come with very high prices.

  • McKinsey found that 82% of American consumers consider wellness a top priority, and spending on health is increasing. In North America, people spend an average of $5,108 per person on wellness each year, compared to $1,596 in Europe.

  • The longevity market heavily targets wealthy customers with expensive, personalized services. For example, Equinox's high-end gyms offer a $40,000-per-year plan with tailored training and nutrition. Even cheaper options like Planet Fitness are raising prices to capitalize on the trend.

  • Some billionaires are taking longevity treatments to the extreme. Take Bryan Johnson who spends $2 million a year on his health. His routine includes a vegan diet with 100 daily supplement pills, intense daily workouts, and a dedicated medical team constantly monitoring his health markers. His last meal is at 11:30 am and he goes to bed at 8:30 pm.

  • As personalized fitness data becomes more accessible, more people will likely follow tailored workout and diet plans. This trend is seen as the next step in the evolution of health and fitness.

Iran Helicopter Crash

A helicopter carrying Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi had a rough landing in Iran’s East Azerbaijan province.

  • The incident happened near Jolfa, close to the Azerbaijan border, though details were unclear and varied. State TV and news agencies did not provide specific information on Raisi's condition. Bad weather and fog have hindered rescue efforts, and teams are still trying to reach the helicopter.

  • Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidi said that bad weather forced the helicopter to land abruptly. A rescue helicopter also attempted to reach the area but couldn’t land because of the mist.

  • President Raisi, a hard-liner and former judiciary chief, is a protégé of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and possibly his successor. Raisi won the 2021 presidential election with the lowest voter turnout in Iran's history and is under U.S. sanctions for his role in past executions. Under his leadership, Iran has increased uranium enrichment and supported Russia and proxy groups in conflicts.

Rollercoaster PGA Championship

A new PGA champion was crowned on Sunday, while the favorite to win was arrested.

  • Xander Schauffele silenced doubters, claiming his first major at the PGA Championship by beating out Bryson DeChambeau by 1 stroke. Schauffele's 6-under 65 in the final round set a record 21-under total. He drained a clutch 6-foot birdie putt on 18 to win, becoming the first since Phil Mickelson (2005) to clinch a PGA Championship with a final-hole birdie.

  • A misunderstanding at the PGA Championship led to the arrest of world No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler Friday morning. Traffic near the course entrance was diverted due to a fatal pedestrian accident earlier that morning. Unaware of the accident, Scheffler attempted to enter the course by driving around the traffic. An officer tried to stop him, and according to the officer's report, Scheffler's car dragged him a short distance, causing minor injuries. Scheffler's lawyer, however, maintains that Scheffler followed instructions from another traffic organizer and was unaware of the situation.

  • He was taken to jail and released just before his tee time. Despite this, he managed to shoot a 5-under 66 on Friday.

  • Scheffler struggled on Saturday with a 2-over 73, his worst score in over 266 days. However, he bounced back on Sunday with a 6-under 65, his best score in the final round of a major championship. He finished tied for eighth place.

Little Stories

  • A teenage girl trafficked from Mexico to California texted 911 for help. Despite not knowing her location, she described landmarks in her texts (which were translated from Spanish to English). With this information, authorities were able to find and rescue her. (More)

  • A judge has reopened the sentencing of Dave Depape for attacking Nancy Pelosi's husband. Federal rules require allowing the defendant to speak before sentencing and DePape wasn't given that chance. The sentencing portion will begin again on May 28. (More)

  • Julian Assange's long-running extradition fight could reach a critical point this week. A key hearing in London's High Court could decide whether he's sent to the U.S. on espionage charges or gets another shot at appealing extradition. Assange was indicted on 18 charges in the U.S. over Wikileaks’s publication of hundreds of thousands of classified documents in 2010. (More)

  • Weeks of rainfall in southern Brazil have caused devastating flooding. The high water forced half a million people from their homes in Porto Alegre. The evacuations began three weeks ago, and meteorologists say it could take another month before the water is low enough for people to return. (More)

  • An Israeli airstrike targeting a house in a Gaza refugee camp killed at least 27 people, mostly women and children, with the toll possibly higher. Concurrently, U.S. national security adviser Jake Sullivan planned to meet Israeli leaders to discuss a U.S. proposal for Saudi Arabia to recognize Israel and support the Palestinian Authority in Gaza. The goal is to grant Palestinian statehood eventually. (More)
