Minnesota Congressional Gunman Sentenced

• A Minnesota man who pleaded guilty to killing former House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, and wounding state Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, was sentenced yesterday to two consecutive life terms plus 40 years in prison.

• Vance Boelter, 59, pleaded guilty in June to six federal charges, avoiding the death penalty in exchange for the maximum sentence short of execution. Prosecutors said he spent months planning the attacks before disguising himself as a police officer and visiting the lawmakers' homes in the early morning hours of June 14, 2025.

• Authorities said Boelter first shot and critically wounded the Hoffmans before traveling to the Hortmans' home, where he fatally shot both victims. Investigators said he also visited two other lawmakers' homes that night before the attacks ended, prompting the largest manhunt in Minnesota history. Boelter still faces separate state charges stemming from the shootings.

FDA Panel Reviews Unapproved Peptides

• A Food and Drug Administration advisory panel will meet over the next two days to consider whether certain unapproved peptides should be added to the list of substances that can be produced by compounding pharmacies. The discussion comes amid growing public interest in the therapies, many of which are marketed online despite lacking FDA approval.

• The panel will review seven peptides, including BPC-157, which is promoted for injury recovery and other health benefits. Adding a peptide to the compounding list would allow pharmacies to prepare it with a prescription for certain patients but would not constitute FDA approval.

• More than 80 peptide-based medicines are already approved by the FDA for uses such as diabetes and other medical conditions. Many of the peptides under review, however, have limited human testing, and regulators have previously cited safety concerns when restricting compounded versions.

Houthi Attacks Hit Oil Tankers

• Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi rebels claimed responsibility for attacks on two Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea on Thursday, marking their first reported strike on commercial vessels since announcing a blockade of Saudi-linked shipping earlier this week.

• The attacks threaten shipping through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a key trade route linking the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. Saudi officials confirmed one tanker caught fire, while there were no immediate reports of casualties.

• Brent crude briefly rose above $100 a barrel following the attacks, while President Trump warned of "major military punishment" if the Houthis continue targeting commercial shipping.
