Ukraine Peace Deal Progress

  • President Trump said Sunday that Ukraine and Russia are "closer than ever before" to a peace deal after hosting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at Mar-a-Lago, though he warned negotiations could still fail. The meeting followed a 2.5-hour call between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

  • Zelenskyy said a 20-point draft proposal is "about 90% ready." The US has agreed to offer Ukraine NATO-like security guarantees in exchange for Zelenskyy dropping his NATO membership bid. Key issues remain unresolved, including whether Russia can keep roughly 20% of Ukrainian territory it has seized.

  • After their meeting, Trump and Zelenskyy called leaders from France, Germany, the UK, Poland, Finland, and the EU to discuss the peace plan, which would require European participation in security guarantees. Trump said he will speak with Putin again and expects to know within weeks whether a deal is possible.

US Hits ISIS in Nigeria

  • The United States launched strikes on ISIS camps in northwest Nigeria on Thursday, killing multiple terrorists, according to US Africa Command. The operation targeted ISIS forces that have been attacking communities in the region.

  • Nigeria's Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar said his government provided intelligence to the US before the strikes and received advanced notice of the operation. He spoke with Secretary of State Marco Rubio for 19 minutes before the strikes began. Nigeria's foreign ministry said the strikes were "precision hits on terrorist targets" and part of "structured security cooperation with international partners."

  • President Trump said in November the strikes would target ISIS forces killing Christians, though analysts note most victims of armed groups in northern Nigeria are Muslims.

Winter Storm Cancels 3,000 Flights

  • More than 3,000 flights were canceled or delayed across the United States on Sunday following a winter storm that hit the Midwest and Great Lakes during the Christmas-New Year travel period. At least 4,400 flights have been canceled since Friday.

  • While the initial storm has weakened, a new arctic air system moving into the Great Plains is expected to bring heavier snow and blizzard conditions through today (Monday). Over 26 million people are under winter weather advisories.

  • The upper Midwest and Great Lakes could see up to two feet of snow south of Lake Superior, while freezing rain and ice are the main concerns for the Northeast.
