Today’s Big Story
Pakistan Declares War
Pakistan's defense minister declared "open war" with Afghanistan yesterday after the two countries exchanged cross-border airstrikes. Afghanistan struck Pakistan late Thursday, saying it was retaliating for deadly Pakistani airstrikes on Afghan border areas last Sunday. Pakistan responded early Friday with strikes on Kabul and two other Afghan provinces, targeting what it said were military installations.
Pakistan claims 274 Afghan forces were killed since Sunday's initial airstrikes. Afghanistan disputes the figure, claiming 55 Pakistani soldiers were killed. Neither side's claims could be independently verified. Pakistan also shot down several drones over northwestern cities on Friday, blaming the Taliban government for the attacks.
The conflict stems from Pakistan's accusation that Afghanistan's Taliban government harbors militant groups staging cross-border attacks inside Pakistan. Previous Qatar-brokered ceasefire talks collapsed in November. The UN, Russia, Iran, Turkey, and Qatar called for restraint as fighting continued at the Torkham border crossing.
