Parasite Outbreak Ends

• The CDC declared the nation's largest known cyclosporiasis outbreak over after 12,883 confirmed cases across 21 states were linked to iceberg lettuce grown by Taylor Farms in Mexico. The contaminated lettuce is no longer available in stores or restaurants, and new infections tied to the outbreak have fallen sharply.

• That outbreak accounts for most, but not all, of an unusually large nationwide surge in cyclosporiasis, an intestinal illness caused by the Cyclospora parasite. Nearly 19,600 cases have been reported across 49 states and Washington, D.C., this year, including 1,043 hospitalizations and two deaths. The illness typically spreads through contaminated food or water and can cause prolonged diarrhea, nausea, and other gastrointestinal symptoms.

• Federal investigators are still examining at least five other cyclosporiasis outbreaks whose sources have not been publicly identified. Cyclospora can be particularly difficult to trace because symptoms can take time to appear and investigators lack some of the genetic tools used to connect cases of E. coli and other foodborne pathogens.

• The CIA released its largest-ever disclosure of intelligence related to 9/11, publishing 71 reports detailing what U.S. officials knew about Osama bin Laden and al Qaeda before the attacks. Among them, a 1998 memo warned extremists might fly an explosive-packed plane into a U.S. city, while reports from 2001 described unprecedented indications of an approaching attack. (More)

• A 15-year-old boy survived for days atop an overturned fishing boat in Alaska’s Bering Sea after the vessel capsized, killing his older brother and cousin. Parker Toolie-Noongwook was found Monday near St. Lawrence Island suffering from hypothermia. His family said he spent the ordeal praying and believing he would be rescued. (More)

• California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a package of child-safety laws targeting social media and AI. The measures ban addictive social media feeds for children under 16, require risk assessments for AI chatbots and allow penalties of up to $1 million per child when large social media companies are found negligent in causing harm. Families can also opt out of school-issued laptops. (More)

• U.S. inflation remained elevated in August, with consumer prices rising 3.4% from a year earlier. While the reading was roughly in line with expectations, it reinforced Wall Street’s belief that the Federal Reserve could raise interest rates next week. Oil provided some relief Friday, with Brent crude falling 3% to about $104 a barrel after approaching $110 overnight. (More)

• A former CIA officer arrested after federal agents found 303 gold bars worth about $40 million at his home has reached a plea agreement in principle with prosecutors. David Rush has so far been charged only with stealing public funds by allegedly falsifying pay records, leaving the gold's origin unexplained. Agents also seized about $2 million in cash and 35 luxury watches. Details of the proposed plea deal remain undisclosed. (More)
