Today’s Big Story

CDC Rolls Back Newborn Vaccine

  • The CDC's vaccine advisory panel voted Friday to roll back the 34-year recommendation that all newborns receive the hepatitis B vaccine within 24 hours of birth. The panel, whose members were replaced by Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. in June, voted 5-3 for the change.

  • The new guidance lets women who test negative for hepatitis B decide with their provider whether their baby gets the birth dose. Sen. Bill Cassidy, who chairs the Senate health committee, called it 'a mistake' and urged acting CDC Director Jim O'Neill not to adopt the recommendation.

  • Cases of acute hepatitis B among children fell by 99% after the CDC began recommending a universal birth dose in 1991. The vaccines prevented over 6 million infections and nearly 1 million hospitalizations from 1994 to 2023.

The institute funds libraries and museums in all 50 states. (More)

  • The Supreme Court said Friday it will decide whether President Trump can end birthright citizenship, which automatically grants citizenship to anyone born in the U.S. Trump's executive order tries to stop children of undocumented immigrants and temporary visitors from becoming citizens at birth.
