Daily stock market update
U.S. stock markets closed higher across the board on Friday (S&P +0.90%, Nasdaq +1.90%, Dow +0.50%) ~ The Dow and the S&P 500 closed out their third winning weeks in a row. Data showed cooling inflation and stronger-than-expected earning reports support the case that the U.S. could avoid a recession. (More)
McDonald’s teases new CosMc’s restaurant concept
McDonald’s executives said they are creating a spinoff restaurant chain called CosMc’s that will have McDonald’s DNA but its own personality. The new stores will be tested at a handful of sites in early 2024. The company decided to revive CosMc - a McDonaldland Mascot that appeared in ads in the 80’s and 90’s - because the recent reintroduction of another mascot, Grimace, boosted its U.S. business. (More)
As Ford loses billions on EVs, the company embraces hybrids
Ford executives said they are working on a bunch of new hybrid models. The company has spent billions to ramp up EV production but plans to bring more hybrid choices to market because of the success of current gasoline-electric options. More than 10% of its F-150 customers are opting for the hybrid model, and 56% are choosing the hybrid engine ]] for the Maverick pickup over the standard engine. (More)
Meanwhile, Ford recalls 870,000 2021-2023 models of F-150 trucks because of a faulty parking brake that could turn on by itself, causing the driver to lose control. (More)

Carlee Russell charged by Alabama authorities for hoax report of kidnapping
Alabama police are charging Carlee Russell - the woman who reported a missing toddler and then disappeared for two days - with two misdemeanors for claiming that she was kidnapped. Russell turned herself in voluntarily after admitting she wasn’t abducted. Police Chief Nick Derzis said he was disappointed that only misdemeanor charges could be filed against Russell and will ask legislators to enhance the penalties for people who report a false crime. Catholic diocese agrees to pay $100 million settlement to hundreds of abuse victims
The Diocese Of Syracuse, New York, agreed to a $100 million settlement with parishioners who claimed they were preyed on by priests. For now, insurance companies won’t cover the claims. Instead, the diocese - or church district - will have to pay up. However, some of that money could come from churchgoers. If people don’t specify where they want their donation to be applied, it could go towards the settlement, according to a diocese spokesperson. (More)
'Hero' Louisville officer shot in head at mass shooting discharged over 3 months later
A Louisville police officer, critically wounded while responding to a mass shooting at a bank in April, is heading home Friday. 26-year-old officer Nickolas Wilt, who was shot in the head, was discharged Friday after three months in the hospital and rehab. He has regained the ability to speak, swallow, stand, and walk, and his “long-term prognosis is very good,” doctors said. The Louisville community gathered and cheered to show support for Officer Wilt as he was driven home. (More)

Melting Swiss glacier uncovers climber missing since 1986
Human remains found on a glacier in Switzerland were confirmed to be the body of a German climber missing since 1986. Climbers hiking the Theodul glacier discovered the body when they noticed a hiking boot and crampons emerging from the ice. As global temperatures rise, more ice melts in the Alps during the summer revealing things or people, that were lost for decades. (More)
Soldiers declare Niger general as head of state after he led a coup and detained the president
Gen. Adbouranhmane Tchiani declared himself the new leader of Niger after a dramatic coup that saw former President Mohamed Bazoum detained by members of his own presidential guard on Wednesday. The uprising is significant because Niger is seen as the last reliable partner for the West in its efforts to fight Islamic militants in the region. There are also concerns that the new leader will align with Russia, like the country’s neighbors, Burkina Faso and Mali. (More)
Free food fridges take off in parts of Europe in eco-friendly bid to fight waste
A Geneva nonprofit is beefing up its street-side, free-access public refrigerators that restaurants, cooks, and others can use to give away food that’s about to go bad. It’s part of a bigger effort in Switzerland and other European countries to help the environment while cutting down on food waste. A single test-fridge helped save 3.2 tons of food from going to waste last year. (More)

Joe Burrow was carted off the practice field after he pulled up while running a play during day 2 of Bengals training camp. Head coach Zac Taylor said he will be out “several weeks” but wouldn’t answer whether the recovery will bleed into the regular season. (More)
Randy Meisner, Eagles Co-Founder And Country Rock Pioneer, Dies At 77
Randy Meisner, co-founding bassist and vocalist of the legendary rock band the Eagles, passed away at 77 from complications due to Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer is credited for his work on albums including “Eagles,” “Desperado,” “On The Border,” “One of These Nights,” and “Hotel California.” (More)
Yankees reinstate Aaron Judge off IL before series at Orioles
The New York Yankees have lost more games than they’ve won since Aaron Judge went down with a toe injury in June. They are hoping that activating him will help them make the playoffs. WhatsApp will now let you record video messages directly in the app. Previously, users had to record the video on their phone and then upload it to the app. The messages can be 60 seconds long and will begin playing on mute when the app is opened. (More)

Yellowstone’s Steamboat Geyser - the tallest active geyser on earth - could stop erupting due to drought in the region. A new study found that groundwater reserves beneath the national park could become insufficient to feed the geyser due to rising temperatures and decreased rainfall. (More)

A new study found that short bursts of intense physical activity lasting just a few minutes during daily activity reduces cancer risk. Bursts of fast walking, stair climbing, or carrying heavy groceries all qualify as forms of VILPA, or vigorous intermittent lifestyle physical activity. 3.5 minutes of daily VILPA was linked to 18% reduction of cancer incidence compared to no exercise. Meanwhile, 4.5 minutes a day resulted in a 32% drop. (More)
