Passing of the torch at Wimbledon

Carlos Alcaraz lays out for a shot against Novak Djokovic during the Wimbledon final. AELTC/Joe Toth
Carlos Alcaraz topped Novak Djokovic in an intense five-set match on Sunday to win his first Wimbledon championship and his second major overall.
By the numbers: Alcaraz needed to overcome serious odds to beat Djokovic.
Djokovic was seeking his fifth consecutive Wimbledon Championship and record-tying eighth overall.
He also hadn’t been beaten in the championship match in 10 years.
Considered one of the greatest of all time, he’d already won the first two Grand Slam tournaments of the year and 23 over his career.
The future is here: Alcaraz got off to a slow start, coming within a single point of going down 2-0 in a best of three match, but executed with poise and took Djokovic down in five sets.
He is the first man outside the elite group of Djokovic, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Andy Murray to win at Wimbledon since 2002 and many believe it signals a transfer of power in men’s tennis.
On the women’s side Marketa Vondrousova became the first unseeded woman to win Wimbledon on Saturday making a comeback in each set to defeat Ons Jabeur.
Vondrousova watched the Wimbledon tournament a year ago with a cast on her surgically repaired wrist and admitted that she wasn’t sure if she could play at a championship level again.
Jabeur also made history by being the only Arab woman and only North African woman to make it to the final at any Grand Slam tournament.
