Moscow suffers its first attack of the Ukraine War

Eight drones attacked Moscow early Tuesday morning, according to Russian officials, marking the first time the Russian capital has felt the effects of the war in Ukraine.

Break it down: Russia’s Defense Ministry accused Ukraine of carrying out the attacks and said the drones were either shot down or jammed. A top Ukrainian advisor said that Ukraine was “not directly involved” but “watching with pleasure.”

  • Two people were injured, three buildings were damaged, and a number of apartment blocks were evacuated.

  • Russian President Vladimir Putin called the attacks “terrorist activity” and that their air defenses had worked well but will be strengthened.

  • A Kremlin spokesperson said the attacks were in retaliation to very successful strikes on a command center in Ukraine.

Kyiv was also attacked last night

  • Falling debris killed one woman and injured three more. Ukrainian officials said they shot down all 20 drones that targeted the region.

  • Russia has targeted Kyiv 17 times in the month of May, leaving its citizens exhausted by the non-stop air raid sirens and frantic trips to bomb shelters.

Big picture: The first drone strike on Russia’s capital city gave citizens a taste of the stress that Ukrainian people have endured for the past 15 months. The Kremlin now has to deal with a panicked population, who up until yesterday, believed that their air defense systems would keep drones from attacking Moscow.

Moving forward: Both sides are preparing for a Ukrainian counteroffensive aimed at reclaiming territory in the south and east of the country.
