Justices Skeptical of Birthright Order

  • President Trump attended Supreme Court arguments yesterday on his executive order to end birthright citizenship — the first sitting president to attend the high court's oral arguments. A majority of justices, including key conservatives, appeared skeptical. A ruling is expected by the end of June.

  • Trump's order would limit citizenship at birth to children born to US citizens or legal permanent residents, challenging the 14th Amendment's guarantee of citizenship to all persons born on US soil. The administration argues the phrase "subject to the jurisdiction thereof" excludes children of parents without legal allegiance to the US — a reading that conflicts with the 1898 Supreme Court precedent widely considered to affirm birthright citizenship.

  • Chief Justice Roberts called the arguments "very quirky." Justice Jackson asked whether parents would need documents in the delivery room. The ACLU warned the theory could call the citizenship of millions of current Americans into question.

Apple Turns 50

  • Fifty years ago, Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak founded Apple while building computers in a California garage. The 1984 Macintosh was their first landmark, democratizing personal computing for everyday users. By the late 1990s, Apple was near bankruptcy until Jobs returned via the acquisition of his company NeXT and rebuilt it from the ground up.

  • Upon Job’s return, the company went on one of the greatest runs in corporate history. The 1998 iMac saved the company. The 2001 iPod killed the CD era. The 2007 iPhone created the smartphone revolution and spawned entire industries — Uber, Airbnb, and DoorDash among them. Over 2.5 billion people now own Apple products worldwide.

  • Next up is Apple's first foldable iPhone, which Bloomberg describes as the "most significant overhaul in iPhone history," alongside a growing push into on-device AI.

  • CEO Tim Cook marked the occasion saying, "the world is moved forward by people who think different."
