MJ Cashes Out
Basketball legend Michael Jordan is selling his majority stake in the Charlotte Hornets, the team announced on Friday.
Why it matters: Michael Jordan is the only black majority owner in the NBA, and also the only black majority owner of a major sports franchise.
Details: Hornets minority owner Gabe Plotkin and Atlanta Hawks minority owner Rick Schnall put together a new ownership group that includes North Carolina natives rapper J. Cole and country singer Eric Church.
The Hornets are estimated to be worth $1.7 billion but the rumored sale price exceeds $3 billion.
Jordan purchased the majority share for $180 million in 2010, and stands to make over a billion dollars in the deal.
Jordan will also retain a minority stake in the team.
Big picture: Michael Jordan is widely considered the best player of all time, but his successes on the court didn’t translate to the front office. Charlotte has missed the playoffs during 10 of the 13 seasons Jordan has been the majority owner and never made it past the first round when they did.
