Big Stories

Minnesota De-escalation

  • Some federal immigration agents will begin leaving Minnesota on Tuesday following a phone call on Monday between President Trump and Gov. Tim Walz. Border Patrol chief Greg Bovino and other agents are departing after Trump agreed to reduce the federal presence and cooperate with an independent state investigation. Walz described a definite change of tone from the president and said Trump seemed open to further de-escalation.

  • The pullback follows two fatal shootings by federal agents in Minneapolis this month. Alex Pretti, an intensive care nurse, was shot and killed Saturday during an immigration operation. Renee Good was killed by an ICE agent on Jan. 7. Videos and eyewitness accounts of Pretti's shooting contradict the administration's account that he violently resisted agents.

  • The White House would not say whether Trump agrees with officials who labeled Pretti a domestic terrorist without evidence. A spokesperson said Trump wants to let the investigation continue and let the facts lead the case.

Last Gaza Hostage Identified

  • The Israeli military identified the remains of the last hostage held in Gaza on Monday, completing the first phase of a ceasefire deal with Hamas that began in October. Ran Gvili, a 24-year-old police officer killed during the Oct. 7, 2023 Hamas attack, will be returned to his family for burial. The identification had been delayed for months as Hamas struggled to locate remains under rubble from Israeli strikes.

  • Under the first phase, Hamas agreed to release all living and dead hostages in exchange for Israel releasing Palestinian prisoners. The truce has been strained; Israel has killed 480 Palestinians in Gaza since it began, according to Gaza health officials.

  • The second phase requires Hamas to disarm and hand over weapons, a major obstacle, and includes partial reopening of the Rafah border crossing with Egypt. Negotiations continue over implementation.

EU and India Strike Trade Deal

  • India and the European Union have finalized a sweeping free trade agreement nearly 20 years after talks began, creating a trade bloc of nearly 2 billion people. Both sides are seeking to reduce economic dependence on China and the United States.

  • Under the deal, India is expected to ease access for European products such as cars and wine, while the EU will further open its markets to Indian textiles, pharmaceuticals, and other exports. The concessions build on a trade relationship that reached $139 billion in goods in 2024, up 90% over the past decade.

  • Beyond trade, the agreement is expected to include arrangements on labor mobility, technology, security, and defense cooperation. The EU expects its exports to India to double under the new market access terms.
