Middle East Check-In
The 60-day negotiating period for a U.S.-Iran peace agreement expired Monday with no deal or extension announced. Trump dismissed the deadline as irrelevant and said there is no timeline for an agreement, while Iran and the U.S. remain divided over the terms for ending the war.
Iran separately says it has reached an understanding with Oman on a plan for ships to transit the Strait of Hormuz and is finalizing the details. The waterway, which carried roughly one-fifth of globally traded oil before the war, has been largely closed since U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran began in February.
In Gaza, U.S. envoy Jared Kushner met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday after holding a rare two-hour meeting with Hamas leader Khalil al-Hayya. Hamas has accepted a U.S.-backed road map that includes disarmament, but Israel rejected it last week and is demanding Hamas fully disarm before Israeli forces begin withdrawing.
Fighting elsewhere continues to widen the conflict. Yemen's Iran-backed Houthis claimed attacks on a ship and four military boats in the Red Sea, while drones struck the offices or homes of two senior officials in Iraq's Kurdish region. No casualties were reported in the Iraqi attacks, and responsibility remains unclear.
Hayden Panettiere Dies
Actor Hayden Panettiere, best known for her roles in television's “Heroes” and “Nashville,” died Sunday at age 36, her family announced. She was found unresponsive in Greenville, South Carolina, and pronounced dead at the scene. Police said the preliminary investigation found no signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances, and a cause of death has not been released.
Panettiere began acting in commercials before her first birthday and appeared in soap operas as a child before moving into film and television. Her early film roles included Remember the Titans, before she rose to wider fame as Claire Bennet on Heroes and later earned two Golden Globe nominations for playing country singer Juliette Barnes on Nashville.
Earlier this year, Panettiere published the memoir This Is Me: A Reckoning, in which she discussed her career and personal life, including struggles with postpartum depression and addiction. Her death comes three years after her younger brother, actor Jansen Panettiere, died unexpectedly from an undiagnosed heart condition.
Russia's Amazon Targeted
Ukrainian drones have struck about 20 warehouses belonging to Wildberries, Russia's largest online retailer and its closest equivalent to Amazon, during a monthlong campaign extending from Moscow and St. Petersburg to the Ural Mountains. Ukraine says seven of the company's 10 largest logistics centers have been knocked out of operation.
Wildberries handles roughly half of Russia's online orders and provides storage and delivery services for an estimated 500,000 to 800,000 sellers. Some estimates suggest the strikes have destroyed up to 20% of its warehouse capacity and caused as much as $6 billion in losses, leaving hundreds of thousands of merchants potentially exposed to lost inventory.
Ukraine says the warehouses distribute military and dual-use equipment and that the campaign is also intended to strain Russia's economy. Wildberries carried an estimated $15 billion in debt at the end of 2025, and Russia's central bank has asked lenders to restructure loans for businesses that lost merchandise in the attacks.
