Mexico Elects First Female President
Claudia Sheinbaum has been elected as Mexico's first woman president in a historic landslide victory.
Preliminary results show the former mayor of Mexico City winning between 58% and 60% of the vote, giving her a significant lead over her main rival, Xóchitl Gálvez. Sheinbaum will replace her mentor, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, on October 1.
Sheinbaum has promised to continue the welfare programs started by López Obrador, which have been popular among many Mexicans. Before running for president, Sheinbaum was the first female mayor of Mexico City. Her background as a scientist and her work on climate change and energy helped pave the way for her political career. Her multicultural heritage and family history add to her unique profile as Mexico’s new leader.
The election, which saw two female front-runners, was significant for women's progress in Mexico but was marred by violence. More than 20 local candidates were killed during the campaign. Sheinbaum's win means she will face the challenge of tackling Mexico's violent cartels. She plans to address the root causes of violence through welfare programs and promises to maintain a respectful relationship with the United States while defending Mexicans living there.
Remembering D-Day
Parachutists jumped from World War II-era planes over Normandy, France, on Sunday to start a week of ceremonies for the 80th anniversary of D-Day.
The event honors the rapidly disappearing generation of Allied troops who fought in World War II. Veterans, many now in their late nineties, returned to the beaches where they landed under heavy fire on June 6, 1944, to help liberate Europe from Nazi rule.
The ceremonies will include parachute jumps, fireworks, and music from the WWII era. Two of the planes used to kick off the week, "That’s All, Brother" and "Placid Lassie," were part of the original D-Day invasion.
Neil Hamsler, a former British paratrooper, felt like he was reliving history during his jump. Meanwhile, U.S. Marine Corps veteran Don Graves emphasized the importance of remembering the horrors of war and the bravery of those who served. Many veterans, like Ralph Goldsticker, who hadn't spoken about their experiences for decades, shared memories of the intense battles and their pivotal roles in the Allied victory.
Trump Okay with Jail Time
Former President Trump said he's okay with possibly getting house arrest or jail time after his recent conviction on 34 felony counts in his New York hush money trial.
His sentencing is set for July 11, just four days before the Republican National Convention, where he is expected to accept the GOP's 2024 presidential nomination.
Trump could face anything from probation to up to four years in prison, with about 10% of similar cases resulting in jail time. House arrest is another option, which would confine him to a certain area and might require him to wear an ankle monitor, allowing him to continue his campaign virtually.
Former President Trump said in a pre-taped interview on Fox News' "Fox & Friends" that house arrest or jail time would be "tough for the public to take." He added he was okay with either outcome and instructed his lawyers not to beg for leniency. Trump also noted that the case has been harder on his family than on him.
