Today’s Big Story

Measles on the Rise

The US has recorded 712 measles cases across 24 states, marking the highest number since 2019 when 1,274 cases were reported.

  • Cases jumped 105 in just one week, and CDC officials note this is likely an undercount due to reporting delays.

  • Western Texas is the epicenter with 541 cases, including two confirmed deaths in unvaccinated school-aged children with no otherwise health issues. A third death in New Mexico is under investigation. The CDC says 11% of measles patients have been hospitalized, the majority of whom are under 19.

  • Most of the cases are isolated in rural communities but Health officials are concerned about potential rapid spread if the infections begin to pop up in urban areas.

  • About 97% of cases nationwide are in unvaccinated people or those with unknown vaccination status. Only 1% had received one MMR dose and 2% had the recommended two doses.

  • The US declared measles eliminated in 2000 thanks to widespread vaccination, but recent declining immunization rates threaten the status. If an outbreak persists for over a year, America could lose its measles elimination designation.
