Escaped convicted killer was spotted overnight and has changed appearance
The convicted killer who escaped from a Pennsylvania prison 11 days ago was sighted more than 20 miles away from the area where authorities were focusing their search efforts. Danelo Cavalcante slipped through the search perimeter in a stolen van that he has since ditched. He also shaved his face and changed his clothes to alter his appearance. Cavalcante fled after he was convicted of the first-degree murder of his former girlfriend in 2021. (More)
Maui lifting most tourism restrictions next month
Most tourism restrictions on West Maui will be lifted on Oct. 8. Hawai’i officials had discouraged tourism while search crews and relief efforts were underway in the areas impacted by the wildfires that killed at least 115 people. However, Tourism serves as the economic backbone for the area, and many hotels and businesses are struggling due to the lack of visitors. Additionally, unemployment claims have jumped from 130 cases per week before the wildfires to 2,705 cases in the third week after the wildfires. (More)
Biden admin wants employers to make opioid overdose reversal drug available
The Biden administration is urging employers to keep the opioid overdose reversal drug naloxone on hand to use in emergency cases. The drug became available over-the-counter at major retailers for the first time this week. The rescue drugs are highly effective if given quickly after an overdose. However, health officials said they will only be useful if they are readily available and bystanders feel comfortable using them. The idea is that people should be able to administer the nasal spray to save a life as easily as they pull the lever to alert people to a fire. (More)

A powerful earthquake in Morocco has killed more than 2,000 people
An earthquake in Morocco has killed more than 2,000 people and injured 2,000 others. The 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck close to Marrakech on Friday night. Many people who were injured or trapped in smaller towns haven’t been reached by rescuers yet because most roads are impassable. The destruction was made worse by the fact that many of the area’s stone buildings date back to the 11th century and weren’t built to withstand earthquakes. (More)
Catholic Church honors Polish family who hid Jews
The Catholic Church held a beatification Mass service in Poland for a Catholic family murdered by the Nazis for hiding Jews during World War II. A Polish officer is believed to have betrayed the family in 1944, and German soldiers searched the house and shot the eight Jews hiding in their attic before executing the Ulma family. More than 30,000 pilgrims, led by Pope Francis’ envoy, attended the beatification service, which is a step in the Roman Catholic Church towards sainthood. (More)

President Biden and other G20 leaders have an announced an international infrastructure project to connect India, the Middle East, and Europe with railways, shipping lines, high-speed data cables, and energy pipelines. The project is intended to counter China’s growing influence in the region. Saudi Arabia, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, and Jordan will be part of the partnership, with the Saudis already pledging $20 billion to the cause (More)

Novak Djokovic defeated Daniil Medvedev in a grueling US Open finals match on Sunday with one of the sets lasting 1 hour and 44 minutes. Musk says he limited Ukraine’s Starlink to prevent attack on Russia
Elon Musk has confirmed that he prevented Ukraine from attacking Russia’s Navy in 2022 by refusing to allow his satellite internet service, Starlink, to be used in the process. Ukrainian drones lost access to the network during the attack and washed ashore harmlessly. Musk denied Kiev’s emergency request to reconnect, saying he didn’t want his company to be explicitly complicit in a major act of war that could escalate the conflict. (More)
US Energy Secretary and her entourage couldn't find enough electric vehicle chargers on their green tech promo trip
The US Secretary of Energy and her team ran into a charging issue while on a road trip to promote electric vehicles. The group stopped for a quick recharge but found there weren’t enough chargers to go around. So, an employee from the DOE tried to save one of the spots with a gas-powered car. An angry family looking for a charge called the police, who didn’t have the authority to act because it’s not illegal to block an EV charging port with a gas-powered car in Georgia. Nonetheless, the incident highlights the need for improved EV infrastructure as the government pushes EV adoption. (More)
NRO and Space Force launch "watchdog" satellites to monitor potential adversaries in space
The National Reconnaissance Office launched multiple satellites into space to keep tabs on the movements of potential enemy spacecraft. The mission will monitor what’s happening day to day in an area of space that is occupied by spy satellites, communications stations, and other high-priority US assets. The NRO’s payload will be able to detect if Chinese and Russian satellites inspect or interfere with US and allied spacecraft. (More)
