House GOP unveils $14.3 billion Israel aid package

House Republicans introduced a $14.3 billion aid package for Israel as a show of support amid its conflict with Hamas. However, this bill includes cuts to Internal Revenue Service (IRS) funding to pay for the foreign aid, which may face opposition from Democrats who passed the Inflation Reduction Act, funded in part by the IRS, last year. The legislation also differs from the White House's strategy of linking aid for Israel and Ukraine. While support for Israel remains strong, the cuts and lack of Ukraine funding will likely cause issues with its approval. (More)

Israeli officials called on Russian authorities to protect Israeli citizens, as Dagestan has a strong connection to Israel due to emigration following the Soviet Union's collapse. Russian leaders condemned the riots, blaming "outside interference," and are investigating the events. (More)

Venezuela suspends opposition leader's win despite fair elections promise

Venezuela's top court has suspended the results of the presidential primaries held by the opposition party, possibly violating an agreement between President Nicolás Maduro's government and the opposition. The decision aims to push the opposition out of the 2024 presidential race. María Corina Machado won the opposition's primary election, but Attorney General Tarek William Saab is investigating the organizers on various charges. Experts suggest this move is meant to sow doubt among Venezuelans about the Machado’s credibility. The Maduro administration may intensify its actions if the opposition continues to campaign. (More)

Turkey is celebrating 100 years as a republic.

Turkey celebrated the 100th anniversary of the modern republic's founding. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan watched the festivities from the residence of the last Ottoman sultan. The country has significantly evolved since its foundation, as it has shifted away from the secular, Westernized state envisioned by its founding father, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, to a more conservative, religious nation. Erdogan's leadership has polarized the country, with his vision resonating with some and alienating others. His ability to appeal to Turkey’s religious and conservative population has helped him maintain his long-standing rule, despite deep divisions in the country. (More)
