Rescue operation to save American caver could start Saturday

The operation to save American caver Mark Dickey could start Saturday. He is stranded 3,600 feet underground in Turkey and suffering from suspected gastrointestinal bleeding that started during the exploration mission. He is currently stable but has said he will need help getting out of the cave. A federal judge rejected former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows’ request to move his Georgia criminal case to federal court. Meadows argued that the allegations in his indictment were related to his duties as White House Chief of Staff, but the judge disagreed, saying his actions were outside the scope of his federal role. The decision is significant for the other defendants in the trial, including Trump, who are trying to move their cases to federal court. Unedited body cam footage shows Officer Mark Dial shooting through Irizarry’s rolled up car window roughly five seconds after exiting his police car. Dial’s defense attorneys said their client believed Irizarry was pointing a gun at him and can prove his actions were justified. (More)

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., announced that she will run for reelection in 2024. The 83-year-old had previously said she wouldn’t run for another term. She was the first woman elected speaker of the House in US history. Democrats will look to retake control of the House of Representatives after losing nine seats in the 2022 midterm election. (More)

The IRS plans to crack down on 1,600 millionaires to collect millions of dollars in back taxes

The IRS is launching an effort to pursue 1,600 millionaires and 75 large business partnerships that owe hundreds of millions of dollars in past due taxes. The agency is using AI research tools to help identify the wealthy tax dodgers who owe at least $250,000 each in back taxes. The new tools allow them to see patterns and trends that indicate where the income is being hidden. (More)

Massachusetts has committed to solving childhood hunger by becoming the 8th state to make School Meals for All permanent, starting with the upcoming 2023-2024 school year. 2,000 Southern White Rhino to be released into the wild over next 10 years

Two thousand white rhinos will be released into the wild over the next 10 years after conservationists took over the world’s largest private rhino breeding operation. The property in South Africa is home to as much as 15% of the world’s remaining rhino population. The animals will be released in secure, managed locations over the next decade. (More)

Amy enrolled to get her master’s degree and will be joining her two daughters who are in their freshman and sophomore years. And 71-year-old Grandma Malczewski, who retired three years ago, will pursue her master’s as well. (More)

Woman pulls paralyzed Texas man from burning car: “She was his angel”

An unnamed woman pulled a paralyzed man named Dennis Brown out of a car before it burst into flames in Dallas. Brown was driving a rental vehicle equipped with hand controls when it caught on fire. He was struggling to get his wheelchair to open when the anonymous good Samaritan dragged him out of the car to safety. (More)
