Dockworker Strike

The Virginia Pilot via AP
Dockworkers from 36 ports along the U.S. East and Gulf coasts started striking yesterday.
The workers are demanding higher wages and protections against automation replacing their jobs. They began picketing at ports after their contract with port authorities expired at midnight. It is the first dockworker strike since 1977.
The workers, represented by the International Longshoremen's Association (ILA), want a 77% pay raise over six years and a total ban on automation. The ports offered a 50% raise and limits on automation, but no deal was reached. The two sides haven't formally negotiated since June. President Biden said he wouldn’t intervene despite pressure from advisors.
Experts warn that if the strike lasts more than a few weeks, it could cause shortages of goods like bananas, coffee, and holiday items, leading to higher prices and empty shelves. The strike could cost the U.S. economy $5 billion per day and create major disruptions in the supply chain.

Iran Missile Attack

On Tuesday, Iran launched its largest missile attack ever against Israel, firing around 180 ballistic missiles in two waves.
Most of the missiles were intercepted by Israeli and U.S. defense systems, preventing major damage or deaths in Israel, though a Palestinian civilian in the West Bank was reportedly killed. The attack was a retaliation for recent Israeli assassinations in Lebanon, according to Iran.
The missile strike is a significant escalation, and there are concerns that it could lead to a wider regional war involving Iran. The strike follows two months of rising tensions after Israel assassinated key leaders allied with Iran. Israel's retaliation is expected to be stronger than previous responses, and officials are preparing for further conflict.
Meanwhile, Israel’s military began a ground offensive in Lebanon. Its goal is to protect northern Israeli communities from threats after an airstrike killed Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah. Israeli commandos are raiding Hezbollah targets, supported by air force and artillery.

Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter celebrated his 100th birthday, a milestone no other former president has reached.
Carter, who served from 1977 to 1981, has been receiving hospice care for 19 months at his home in Plains, Georgia. Despite his health, he hopes to live long enough to vote in the 2024 presidential election.
Carter’s birthday was celebrated with a star-studded concert in Atlanta featuring performances by the B-52's and tributes from his political successors, including President Joe Biden and Barack Obama. Although Carter couldn’t attend in person, the concert was aired on Georgia Public Television for his family to enjoy at home.
Beyond his presidency, Carter made a lasting impact through his humanitarian work. He promoted human rights, helped grow Habitat for Humanity, and founded the Carter Center, earning him a Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.
