The fight over a bill targeting credit card fees pits payment companies against retailers

The Credit Card Competition Act was reintroduced last month in both the House and Senate. The measure aims to increase competition for credit card processing networks by requiring big banks to allow at least one network that isn’t Visa or Mastercard to be used for their cards. Supporters of the legislation say it will help reduce swipe fees and cut costs for merchants and their customers. Opponents say it will hurt consumers by diminishing credit card rewards programs and lessening fraud protections. (More)

After $700 million U.S. bailout, trucking firm Yellow is shutting down

Yellow notified staff that it is shutting down and laying off employees at all of its locations. The company is also expected to file for bankruptcy. Even after the government supplied it with a $700 million bailout loan during the pandemic because its operations were considered vital to the nation’s supply chains. At the end of March, Yellow’s outstanding debt was $1.5 billion. As one of the largest freight trucking companies in the U.S., its shutdown could have a ripple effect across the nation’s supply chain. (More)

Trader Joe's issues third product recall in a week, says falafel 'may contain rocks'

Trader Joe’s is recalling its third item in a week, Fully Cooked Falafel. The company said the product may contain rocks, the same reason it recalled two cookie products last week. Last Thursday, they also recalled their broccoli cheddar soup because the product could have insects. (More)

White House watching rising gas prices ‘very carefully’

Advisors to Biden believe that the situation is steady considering it’s the height of air conditioning and driving season. The average price of retail gas nationally rose to $3.73 Friday, a 15 cent spike in a week. However, it’s lower than last year by 54 cents. Analysts blame supply cuts by OPEC and Russia, extreme heat that has sidelined oil refineries, and an improving world economy for the price increases. (More)

Veterans mark 70 years since the Korean War cease fire

Veterans gathered at the Korean War Memorial in Washington D.C. to commemorate the 70-year anniversary of the Korean War. The war ended in a cease-fire instead of a victory and many Veterans still struggle with America’s perception of the conflict. Many people call it “the Forgotten War” but U.S. Marine Col. Warren Wiedhahn refers to it as “the forgotten victory.” “We saved South Korea from becoming a communist country,” he said. (More)

Family accuses Delta of negligence after drunken passenger allegedly groped mom and her teen daughter

A federal lawsuit was filed against Delta Airlines on Tuesday accusing flight attendants of failing to intervene after a male passenger was served at least 10 alcoholic drinks and then groped a mother and her 16-year-old daughter. According to the lawsuit, flight attendants continued to serve the man drinks and didn’t move the mother and daughter even after they asked to switch seats. (More)

At least 44 killed in blast at political rally in Pakistan

A bomb blast killed 55 people and injured 135 more in northwest Pakistan at a political party gathering. Police said the explosion was caused by a suicide bomb but no group claimed responsibility for the attack. The region borders Afghanistan where Islamic militants attack security forces and civilians often. (More)

Russia's Medvedev: We'd have to use a nuclear weapon if Ukrainian offensive was a success

Dmitry Medvedev, the deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council said on Sunday that Moscow would have to use a nuclear weapon if Kyiv’s counter-offensive was a success. He appeared to be referring to a part of Russia’s nuclear doctrine that states nuclear weapons can be used when attacks against Russia using conventional weapons threaten the existence of the country. However, Medvedev has a history of making extreme statements to discourage Western countries from continuing to supply Ukraine with arms. (More)

American Nurse and her child kidnapped in Haiti

Nonprofit group El Roi Haiti said American Alix Dorsainvil and her child were kidnapped Thursday morning from its location near Port-au-Prince. The two were taken “while serving our community ministry”, according to the organization. The kidnapping took place the same day the State Department ordered nonemergency U.S. government employees and families to leave Haiti due to increasing violence. (More)

Colombia scored in the last minute to upset the two-time world champion Germany 2-1 on Sunday. The game looked as if it would end in a tie after Germany scored in the 89th minute on a penalty shot. Lee Hodges dominates 3M Open for first PGA tour victory

Hodges shot a 67 in the final round on Sunday to clinch a wire-to-wire title and his first tour victory. He went from 74th place in the FedEx Cup standings to 33rd with the win, locking up a spot in the playoffs that begin in two weeks. (More)

Illegal medical lab containing bioengineered mice and infectious agents including HIV and herpes discovered in California

Investigators found an illegal lab in California containing 1,000 bioengineered mice, medical waste, and hazardous material. The CDC tested substances inside the warehouse and detected at least 20 potentially infectious agents including coronavirus, HIV, hepatitis, and herpes. The warehouse belongs to Prestige Biotech, who did not have the licensing or permits that allow experiments or other lab activity. The company is accused of failing to comply with orders and failing to provide a plan to dispose of the biological materials. (More)

Georgia resident dies from rare brain-eating amoeba, health officials say

A Georgia resident who was infected while swimming in a freshwater lake or pond has died from a rare brain eating amoeba infection. Naegleria fowleri is an amoeba that lives in soil and warm freshwater areas but isn’t found in saltwater or properly treated drinking water or swimming pools. From 1962-2001, only four out of the 154 people in the U.S. survived a brain-eating amoeba infection, according to the CDC. (More)

Mark Zuckerberg: Threads users down by more than half

The Twitter rival rocketed to more than 100 million users within five days of its launch earlier this month. But CEO Mark Zuckerberg said that active users are down by more than half. He anticipates the retention to improve as new features are added to the app. (More)
