French PM Ousted
French lawmakers dismissed Prime Minister François Bayrou in a no-confidence vote Monday, rejecting his plan for €44 billion in budget cuts. It marks the second ousting in nine months, following Michel Barnier’s removal in December, and forces President Emmanuel Macron to appoint a fifth prime minister in under two years.
France's Parliament is deeply divided, where no party has enough seats to govern alone, making prime ministers vulnerable to opposition attacks. This deadlock stems from Macron's snap elections last year, called after Le Pen's far-right National Rally surged in European voting, which split parliament three ways without giving anyone control.
Meanwhile, France's deficit reached 5.8% of economic output, nearly double the EU's 3% limit. Without a cohesive government able to pass budget cuts, the instability will likely persist until the 2027 presidential elections, when Macron steps down and a new leader can call fresh parliamentary elections
Supreme Court Immigration Ruling
The Supreme Court allowed federal immigration enforcement to resume in Los Angeles on Monday, lifting a restraining order in a 6-3 decision. A federal judge had found constitutional violations from indiscriminate arrests and barred stops based solely on race, language, or job.
Plaintiffs included US citizens detained during operations, including a man videotaped yelling, 'I was born here,' before being released. Justice Sotomayor dissented that people were 'grabbed and handcuffed simply because of their looks and accents.' The Trump administration argued the order wrongly restricted ICE agents during its immigration crackdown.
The decision allows immigration operations to resume immediately while the underlying lawsuit challenging enforcement tactics continues in federal court. ICE operations had slowed after the July restraining order, but recently increased in defiance of the restraining order, including agents making arrests from rented trucks at LA stores.
Attack In Israel
Two Palestinian gunmen opened fire at a crowded bus stop in Jerusalem on Monday morning, killing six people and wounding 12, officials said. An Israeli soldier and civilians shot and killed the attackers; police later arrested a third suspect. Officials said the shooters, ages 20 and 21, were from the West Bank and had no prior arrests.
Hamas praised the attack as a “natural response” but did not claim responsibility. Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas condemned all violence against civilians. The attack was Israel’s deadliest since October 2024 and comes amid rising West Bank clashes and settler violence since the Gaza war began.
Meanwhile, six more Gazans died from famine in the past 24 hours, bringing malnutrition deaths to 393, including 140 children. The Israeli military continues its Gaza offensive, ordering city residents to evacuate as it seeks control of the area.
