U.S. stock markets closed lower on Friday (S&P -0.53%, Nasdaq -0.36%, Dow -0.43%) ~ The S&P 500 and Nasdaq fell for the fourth consecutive day as traders seemed to book profits following the latest cooperate earnings releases and U.S. jobs data. (More)

US economy creates 187,000 new jobs in July as labor slowdown continues

Job growth in July was less than expected at 187,000, slightly below the Dow Jones estimate of 200,000. Though the number missed expectations, it was a slight increase from the 185,000 jobs added in June. The unemployment rate fell to 3.5%, just above the lowest level since 1969. (More)

Customers report missing deposits from Wells Fargo bank accounts

Customers contacted Wells Fargo via Twitter on Thursday, now branded as “X”, claiming that they could not access money that they deposited in the bank. One person tweeted that he had even been hit with an overdraft fee after his money went missing. The bank said they are working on a fix for the issue. A similar glitch occurred in March where customers direct deposits were not showing up. However, Wells Fargo said their accounts were secure despite the balance errors. (More)

New York City PlayStation giveaway devolves into street chaos

Police struggled to control a crowd of thousands that gathered in Manhattan’s Union Square on Friday for a social media influencer’s supposed videogame console giveaway that turned violent. Aerial TV news footage showed a surging crowd climbing on vehicles, hurling chairs, and throwing bottles at police officers. The influencer, Kai Cenat, was taken into custody and charged with inciting a riot after the event. (More)

A cyberattack has disrupted hospitals and health care in several states

Prospect Medical Holdings was hacked on Friday forcing some emergency rooms to close and ambulances to be diverted. Many primary care services were also closed as security experts tried to resolve the problem. The company operates hospitals and clinics in California, Texas, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Pennsylvania. (More)

The 2 expelled members of the 'Tennessee 3' win back their state House seats

Reps. Justin Pearson and Justin Jones reclaimed their legislative seats Thursday after they were expelled for involvement in a gun control protest on the House floor. Both members faced opponents in districts that lean heavily left in the special election but easily defeated them. Their reinstatement came as lawmakers will return to Nashville for a special session to possibly change the state’s gun control laws. (More)

Six modern slavery victims rescued in joint operation

An international task force rescued six female victims of modern slavery in north London on Friday. The women are being cared for by specialist officers and the charity Justice and Care. Simultaneously, six people were detained in London and Romania during the operation and officers said they significantly disrupted the criminal network. Authorities believe the network recruited women in Romania by acting as a boyfriend to potential victims. Then they would kidnap and traffic them to London where they were forced into prostitution and controlled by the traffickers. (More)

South American countries gripped by record-breaking heat — in the middle of winter

A winter heat wave is sweeping across South America, with temperatures expected to reach 104°F in parts of Brazil in the coming days. Buenos Aires, Argentina’s capital, recorded its hottest start to August - 86°F - in 117 years of data. The average ranges between 62°F and 49°F. Scientists say the unseasonable heat is being fueled by climate change and the El Nino climate pattern. (More)

Russian court sentences Alexei Navalny to further 19 years in prison

Navalny, once led street protests against the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, built a nationwide opposition, and revealed nasty details of Kremlin officials corrupt lifestyles. As revenge, Russia has sentenced him to a total of 30 years in prison in a special regime with the harshest conditions in the country. The sentence will effectively silence him politically and cut him off from communicating with the outside world for as long as Putin remains alive. (More)

‘Barbie’ closes in on a billion-dollar box office heading into third weekend

Heading into the weekend, “Barbie” has raked in $916.1 million and is expected to hit the $1 billion mark before Monday. If it does, director Greta Gerwig will become the first solo female director to have a film earn $1 billion globally. (More)

Mark Margolis, Actor on ‘Breaking Bad’ and ‘Better Call Saul,’ Dies at 83

Journeyman actor Mark Margolis passed away in New York following a short illness. He was best known for his role as Hector Salamanca on shows Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul for which he received an Emmy nomination in 2012. (More)

Oregon, Washington officially leave Pac-12 for Big Ten

The schools formerly applied for membership Friday and were accepted after a Big Ten vote later in the day. Separately Arizona was admitted to the Big 12 on Thursday, followed by Utah, and Arizona State last night. The departures will leave the Pac-12 gutted. (More)

Babies should get recently approved drug for RSV, CDC says

The CDC said infants should get the newly approved drug to protect against RSV, a respiratory virus that sends thousands of American children to the hospital each year. There are no vaccines for babies yet so the new drug, a lab-made antibody that helps the immune system fight off the virus, is expected to fill a critical need. It is expected to be ready in the fall before RSV season. (More)

500 million-year-old worm found in the U.S.

The newfound, fossilized sea worm was discovered in northern Utah and would have existed during the Cambrian period (541 million to 485.4 million years ago). The new species is named Shaihuludia shurikeni which references the Japanese word for throwing star because of its blade-like bristles. Only one other similar fossil has been found in North America from the Cambrian period. (More)

Google is offering an on-campus hotel ‘special’ to help lure workers back to the office

Employees can book a room at Google’s new on-site hotel for $99 a night. The company hopes the special will “make it easier for Googlers to transition to the hybrid workplace.” However the deal is unapproved for business travel so employees must pay for the stay themselves. The move is Google’s latest attempt to crack down on office attendance as workers have resisted returning after working from home during the pandemic. (More)
