Walmart is bringing ads to an aisle near you as retailers chase new moneymakers

Walmart will begin running third-party ads on screens in self-checkout lanes and TV aisles in its Supercenters. Ad spots will also be played over the store’s radio, and sample items will be demoed throughout the store. The company plans to roll out the demo stations in 1,000 stores across the U.S. by the end of January. (More)

Bed Bath & Beyond is back from the dead

Overstock.com relaunched its website as BedBathandBeyond.com on Tuesday, a month after the online retailer purchased the houseware store’s brand out of bankruptcy. Since the deal was announced, Overstock has added over 600,000 products to its site, including many of the name-brand products that could be found at the old Bed Bath & Beyond. (More)

Henrietta Lacks' descendants reach a settlement over the use of her 'stolen' cells

Henrietta Lacks’ family reached a settlement with a science and tech company for using cells it took without Lacks’ consent to develop products it later sold for a profit. Doctors removed cells from Lack’s tumor while she was being treated for cancer in 1951 without her knowledge or permission. The cells had properties that allowed them to be endlessly reproduced, and they have been used for many scientific breakthroughs over the years, including the development of the polio and COVID-19 vaccines. Massive fire burning in California and Nevada is spawning dangerous ‘fire whirls’

A fire burning across both California and Nevada is spawning “fire whirls” - spinning vortex columns of hot air and gases rising from a fire - which can reach up to 2,000 °F and change directions suddenly. The fire, which is California’s largest of the year, has consumed 80,000 acres. Only 23% of the blaze is contained and is expanding rapidly due to high winds. (More)

Trump Indicted For Third Time

Donald Trump was indicted on four counts Tuesday over alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election. The indictment cites handwritten notes from former Vice President Mike Pence about Trump’s relentless efforts to reject the counting of electoral votes. And it accuses Trump and his allies of using the distraction of the attack on the Capitol to spread false claims of election fraud and further delay the certification of Joe Biden’s victory. (More)

Four Nigerians survived 14 days on a ship's rudder

Brazilian police rescued four Nigerians who had spent 14 days above the rudder of a cargo ship. The migrants ran out of food and water on their tenth day at sea. Two of the men applied for asylum in Brazil and said economic hardship, political instability, and crime forced them to abandon their homeland. (More)

Meta to end news access in Canada over publisher payment law

Meta has begun to end access to news on Facebook and Instagram for all users in Canada. The move comes in response to legislation in the country requiring internet giants to pay news publishers. The legislation is part of a broader global trend of governments trying to make tech firms pay for news. (More)

Once nearing extinction, Brazil’s golden monkeys have rebounded from yellow fever, scientists say

There are more golden lion tamarins in the Brazilian rainforest than at any time since efforts to save the species began in the 1970s. Only 200 animals existed in the wild at one point but the population has rebounded to around 4,800. Numbers declined in 2019 due to yellow fever, but scientists intervened and vaccinated 370 monkeys which helped the population recover. However, the species is still endangered. (More)

Houston Astros acquire Justin Verlander from New York Mets

Justin Verlander is returning to the Houston Astros after they reached an agreement with the New York Mets on Tuesday. Verlander is the reigning American League CY Young Award winner and will bolster Houston’s pitching roster heading into the postseason. Both of the Astros World Series titles came when Verlander was on the roster. (More)

USWNT advances to Round of 16 despite uninspired scoreless draw vs. Portugal

The U.S. women’s soccer team needed a tie or a win against Portugal to advance to the Round of 16 at the FIFA World Cup. They barely escaped with a tie after Portugal’s shot bounced off the goal post in the final minute of the game. The U.S. squad has played poorly and will need to improve if they hope to win their third world cup in a row. (More)

YouTube star MrBeast sues ghost kitchen behind MrBeast Burger

YouTuber MrBeast is suing Virtual Dining Concepts, the company behind his ghost kitchen food chain, MrBeast Burger, for damaging his brand. According to the lawsuit, thousands of customers have sent in negative reviews with photos or burgers and sandwiches with uncooked, inedible meat. (More)

The Euclid Telescope's First Images Have Arrived and They're Stunning

The European Space Agency’s $1.4 billion Euclid telescope took over 11 years to get off the ground but has produced its first test images of the cosmos. Euclid launched on July 1 from Florida and will investigate the nature of dark matter and dark energy, which make up 95% of the universe. Images from the telescope will be at least four times sharper than any shot from the ground but take months to transmit back to earth. (More)

AI-powered brain implant restores a paralyzed man’s ability to feel and move

Scientists have re-established the connection between the brain, body, and spinal cord of a quadriplegic man. They installed an implant in the patient’s brain that lets him feel sensations and move some parts of his body. The implant uses an AI program to convert the patient’s thoughts into actions. “There was a time that I didn’t know if I was even going to live or if I wanted to, frankly. And now, I can feel the touch of someone holding my hand. It’s overwhelming,” said Keith Thomas, the patient. (More)

Elon Musk's X Corp. sues nonprofit group that tracks hate speech

X Corp., formerly known as Twitter, filed a lawsuit against a nonprofit organization that monitors hate speech and disinformation. The suit accuses the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCHD) of creating “a scare campaign to drive away advertisers from the X platform” by publishing research that claims the social media company failed to take action against hateful posts.
