Iran Downs Apache, US Retaliates

  • The US launched strikes against Iran on Tuesday after Trump confirmed Iran shot down a US Apache helicopter in the Strait of Hormuz with a drone. A US Navy surface drone rescued two crew members after two hours in the water, and they are in stable condition.

  • Iran's foreign minister did not confirm or deny shooting down the helicopter, saying foreign forces in the region risked "accidents or crossfire" and should leave. The US strikes hit Qeshm Island and eastern Hormozgan province. Iran warned of a "decisive response" to any further hostility.

  • The retaliation adds new strain to peace negotiations. Israel simultaneously struck Tyre in southern Lebanon, killing eight people, despite US pressure to stand down. Iran has made ending the Lebanon conflict a condition of any broader deal.

Siri AI

  • Apple announced a major overhaul of Siri at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference, rebranding the virtual assistant as Siri AI in its biggest update since the assistant launched in 2011. The revamped assistant draws on information across the device — photos, texts, calendar — as well as the open web to answer questions and complete tasks.

  • Apple has forged a new AI partnership with Google, with Gemini now powering Siri AI and putting it into more direct competition with ChatGPT and other AI assistants. The move comes as Apple's previous relationship with OpenAI has soured. In 2024, Apple integrated ChatGPT into Siri, but OpenAI believes the partnership underperformed and is considering legal action, Bloomberg reported last month.

  • Three of the top six apps in Apple's App Store on Monday were AI assistants, signaling strong consumer demand despite some broader fatigue with AI features. Siri AI will launch later this year on iPhone, iPad, and Mac in English only, with the EU and China initially excluded due to regulatory requirements.

Rethinking Daily Drinking

  • An international team of researchers recommends Americans limit alcohol consumption to no more than one drink per day, arguing the Trump administration's current guidance to simply "drink less" is too vague to help people make informed decisions about their health.

  • After reviewing dozens of studies, the researchers estimated that drinking more than about seven drinks a week raises the lifetime risk of dying from an alcohol-related disease or injury above 1 in 1,000. At 14 drinks a week, that risk climbs to 1 in 25. While light drinking may reduce the risk of some heart conditions, the researchers concluded those benefits are outweighed overall by higher risks of cancer, liver disease and injury.

  • The American Cancer Society recommends avoiding alcohol entirely for optimal cancer prevention. Americans seem to be on board. A new Gallup survey finds just 54% of US adults now report drinking alcohol, the lowest in nearly 90 years of tracking, with a majority saying for the first time that moderate drinking is bad for health.
