June Heat Wave

A June heat wave will send temperatures soaring from the Midwest to the Northeast, starting Sunday and continuing into the coming weeks.

  • 268 million people in the U.S. are forecast to see temperatures reach or exceed 90°F, with many experiencing heat indices at or above 100°F. The extreme heat will affect major cities like Chicago, Washington D.C., New York City, and Boston.

  • The heat wave is projected to form an intense heat dome across the East, potentially setting records for its intensity at this time of year. It will translate to hot, humid, and rain-free weather, with little relief at night, particularly west of the heat dome. Even if it doesn't set intensity records, it will be a long-duration extreme heat event.

  • Dozens of daily temperature records are in jeopardy, as well as June hot streak milestones and possibly some monthly records. The National Weather Service has issued excessive heat watches and its joint heat risk product shows top-tier risk levels moving from the Midwest to the Northeast.

DeChambeau Wins U.S. Open

Bryson DeChambeau won his second U.S. Open title with a dramatic finish on the 18th hole at Pinehurst No. 2.

  • From 55 yards, he chipped out of a sandtrap to within 4 feet and sank a par putt, finishing 6 under. DeChambeau, a LIV Golf player, earned $4.3 million from the record $21.5 million purse.

  • Rory McIlroy lost another close call in a major, missing two short putts down the stretch. He missed a 30-inch par putt on 16 and a 4-footer for par on 18 to fall one behind DeChambeau. McIlroy has seven top-10 finishes without a win at the U.S. Open since his 2011 victory.

  • Patrick Cantlay and Tony Finau tied for third. Cantlay missed out on securing an Olympic spot for the U.S. with his finish. Colin Morikawa will fill the fourth Olympic spot joining Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, and Wyndham Clark.

Peace Talks if Russia Leaves Ukraine - Zelensky

President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Kyiv would hold peace talks with Russia if Moscow withdraws from all Ukrainian territory

  • At the close of a peace summit in Switzerland, Zelensky showed skepticism about Russian President Vladimir Putin's willingness to end the war. He said that Western aid alone isn’t enough to win, but the summit showed that international support for Ukraine remained strong.

  • The summit concluded with many countries affirming Ukraine's territorial claim and blaming Russia for the war's devastation. A final document was created, calling for the return of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant to Ukrainian control, the exchange of prisoners, and the return of abducted children. However, some countries, including India, South Africa, and Saudi Arabia, did not sign the document.

  • The summit's results will be communicated to Moscow, with hopes for a more definitive peace agreement at a future summit. Meanwhile, Russian President Putin's ceasefire proposal was rejected by Western leaders, who called it propaganda and a false narrative.
