The recall’s price tag far exceeded Peloton’s expectations, costing them about $40 million and 20,000 members who paused their monthly subscription while waiting for a replacement seat. Rudy Giuliani surrenders in Georgia 2020 election case
Trump’s former lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, surrendered to authorities in Atlanta on charges in the Georgia election interference case. He is facing 13 charges linked to his alleged efforts to overturn Georgia’s 2020 election results. His lawyers reached a $150,000 bond agreement ahead of his surrender. A stagnant air mass is now stretched across the Central US resulting in dangerous heat. 126 million people were under extreme heat alerts on Wednesday from Chicago to New Orleans and 100 heat records are being set or tied per day this week. All-male S.C. Supreme Court upholds 6-week abortion ban
South Carolina’s all-male Supreme Court upheld a ban on abortion after six weeks of pregnancy, reversing its decision that blocked an abortion ban earlier this year. The court said that a woman’s interest in autonomy and privacy doesn’t outweigh the unborn child’s right to live. South Carolina became the first state with an all-male high court in February. (More)

Officials say a jet crash in Russia kills 10, Wagner chief Prigozhin was on passenger list
A private jet crashed in Russia on Wednesday, killing all 10 people aboard. Yevgeny Prigozhin, the Wagner mercenary boss who led a mutiny against Russia’s military leadership in June, was on the passenger list. However, it is still unclear if he was on the flight. Prigozhin was exiled to Belarus after the mutiny but has since reportedly surfaced in Russia, raising questions about his future. (More)
Suspected Chinese dissident rides jet ski hundreds of miles to South Korea
South Korea arrested a Chinese dissident who rode 200 hundred miles on a jet ski across the open ocean to escape from China. Insiders said the detained man is activist Kwon Pyong who attended Iowa State University and has been openly critical of China’s rule and strict censorship. Pyong has intended to seek asylum since 2019 and finally made a desperate attempt in order to evade prosecution. (More)
At least 26 killed as railway bridge collapses in India
A railway bridge that was under construction in the state of Mizoram, India collapsed on Wednesday killing at least 26 workers and injuring two. The project will connect Mizoram to the rest of the country, boosting tourism and economic development. India’s railway system is used by millions of people everyday but has proven deadly due to its lack of safety protocols and ageing infrastructure. (More)

Miami scored during stoppage time to tie Cincinnati 2-2 and send the game into extra time. Each team scored another goal during the extra period, which forced a penalty shootout. India lands a spacecraft near the moon’s south pole, a first for the world as it joins elite club
India made history for landing its spacecraft near the moon’s south pole on Wednesday. The craft has a rover module that will collect data on lunar soil and rocks in hopes of finding ice that will help future astronaut missions. India attempted a lunar in landing in 2019 but failed. It now joins the US, the Soviet Union, and China as the only countries to make a successful lunar landing. (More)
Parts of tropical rainforests could get too hot for photosynthesis, study suggests
Some leaves in tropical forests are getting so hot, they may no longer be able to photosynthesize - the process by which they make energy from carbon dioxide, sunlight, and water. This ability fails when leaves reach temperatures around 116 °F, leading to leaf loss and potential death of the tree itself. Scientists believe that widespread tree death is unlikely under current climate policies but stress that almost all life is dependent on photosynthesis for food. More immediate concerns for tropical forests include deforestation, wildfires, and droughts. (More)
1 in 5 mothers were mistreated during pregnancy care: US report
1 in 5 mothers in the US say they were verbally abused, ignored, or disrespected by health care workers during maternal care, according to a new government survey. Additionally, the amount of mothers who die during childbirth nearly doubled from 2018 to 2021 to 32.9 deaths per per 100,000 live births, per the CDC. The rate was far higher at 69.9 deaths per 100,000 births for non-Hispanic Black women. Nearly 80% of pregnancy-related deaths are preventable. (More)
