Harris & Trump Tight in Battleground States

Via Axios

A new poll shows Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are tied or very close in three important battleground states.

  • In Wisconsin, Harris leads by 2 points (51% to 49%), and in Michigan, she leads by just 1 point (50% to 49%). In Pennsylvania, they are tied at 50%. These results are all within the margin of error, meaning the race is very tight.

  • Harris has more excitement from her party's voters than Trump. In Michigan, 89% of registered Democrats are excited about Harris, while only 78% of Republicans are excited about Trump. Similar trends are seen in Wisconsin and Pennsylvania.

  • There is still a chance for both candidates to gain more voters. In Wisconsin, 10% of voters who aren’t currently supporting Harris say they might consider voting for her, compared to 4% who might consider Trump. Similar small shifts could happen in Michigan and Pennsylvania. These battleground states are crucial for either candidate's chances of winning the presidency.

Our Galaxies Could be Touching

via Uplash

Scientists have discovered that the outer edges of our Milky Way galaxy stretch much farther than previously thought before.

  • A new study suggests the edges might already be touching those of our closest neighbor, the Andromeda galaxy. Researchers believe that the collision between the two galaxies, predicted to happen in about four billion years, may have already started.

  • The researchers studied a huge cloud of gas called the circumgalactic medium (CGM) that surrounds galaxies and makes up about 70% of a galaxy's mass. By using advanced imaging techniques with the W.M. Keck Observatory in Hawaii, they saw the cloud more clearly than ever before. They found that the CGMs of the Milky Way and Andromeda likely overlap and interact.

  • The CGM plays a major role in how galaxies grow and change, as it helps recycle gas that galaxies use to form stars. By understanding the CGM better, researchers hope to learn more about the life cycle of galaxies.

U.S. Open

via US Open

World number one Jannik Sinner defeated Taylor Fritz to win the U.S. Open, claiming his second Grand Slam title this year.

  • Sinner, who also won the Australian Open in January, beat Fritz in straight sets 6-3, 6-4, 7-5. Sinner became the first player since 1977 to win his first two Grand Slam titles in the same season. He is also the first Italian man to win the singles title at the U.S. Open. His victory comes just weeks after being cleared of any wrongdoing for a positive drug test earlier in the year.

  • Taylor Fritz, the 12th seed from the U.S., was trying to be the first American man to win a Grand Slam singles title in 21 years. Andy Roddick, who won the U.S. Open in 2003 is the last American man to win one.

  • Aryna Sabalenka won the women’s U.S. Open despite a year of injuries. She defended her Australian Open title but missed Wimbledon due to a shoulder injury and struggled in other tournaments. However, she finished strong, winning the Cincinnati event and dominating the U.S. Open, only losing one set. In the final, she beat American Jessica Pegula 7-5, 7-5 to claim her first championship at the tournament.
